quote to do a site. I don't have any info on what he wanted, but he did send me some links and his existing site. I told him I usually charge between $2000-$3000 for a site design and flash work. Now I'm wondering if I scared him off with my prices? What should I do. I sent him a reply last thursday night and hasn't heard back from him.
He contacted me a month ago and said he liked my site and work. Then a couple of weeks ago he asked me if I can redesign his site.
I think the work would be awesome and would benefit me in the future to take him on.
My question is should I go an contact him again and lower my price or should I hold off until the end of this week?
Please help! thanks in advance.

after I gave him my prices I also added taht they are flexible if the work is good.

wait longer, if you seem desperate he'll rape you for sure.

ring him and ask what he thought of the quote.. if he says to hight, say your open to requote, did you have a figure in mind. put in a quote for about 15-20% higher and repeat as nessecary. works everytime

are you short on rent this month?
- unknown0
you should put in an agreement that you'll knock 20% off payment up front... then you kill two birds with one stone!

Just tell him to get quotes from other agencies. He will be back. Just sit it out. I finally got a down payment from a client I first talked to over 6 months ago. That price is good if not a little low for not knowing what he wants and all. But contact him and get some feedback. Thats invalueble anyway.

those are great suggestions. I'm not short on rent, but am planning a long european vacation, so I'll need all the money I can get.. :-)

Seems also that you offered a small per-project range. This could end up being trouble for you later, especially not knowing what he wants. Perhaps it would be better to price per page, animation, etc... Rather than saying you make any site for between 2000 and 3000.

Call him (if its been about a week or so) - "i just wanted to get your thoughts and wondered if you had any questions regarding my/oue proposal" - kinda deal.
If he brings up the money (and remember 9/10 proposal requests are for those who know nothing about what deign work costs and just needed the info) kindly remind him that:
(a) he would be spending 2/3 times more with some agency in a major city, you produce the same level of work if not better (and I know you work is by the way...) for less since you have lower overheads.
(b) Websites are expensive and usually run from $5 to $15 thou at the low end, tell him your price is $3g is very competitive for the work you PRODUCE, you can give him a site for $500 bucks if he wants be you know he wont be happy and be looking for yet another redesign in 6 months. Remind him that you reason he likes your work is because YOU SPENT TIME ON IT! No matter how good or quick we are at design, good well-designed work takes time.
(c) Websites are a one-off cost that yields returns long after the the site has beenn built. When your client has had his 10,000 very impressed new potential client visit his site, that only cost him 3cents, not a bad ROI.
Don't worry brother, your aim is right on - you didn't aim too high at all.
No I'm gonna have some tea, and email my cheap-ass clients :-P

yeah I know my prices are pretty low, but I've been under priced so many times this summer it's not even funny.
I will contact all my european NT friends before coming so I will know where all the cool and hip places are. cu soon.

i hate when people ask for a quote on a site, but barely give any detail and expect you to go with what you have said.
give the numbers and defnitely mention that the more detail, the more accurate the quote, just saves time and headaches.
for your situation, i'd hold off another day or so, then call him. don't email.
- piperboytoy0
I guess I should. I hate talking on the phone. Email is so much easier.
thanks for the advice.

Try and not throw out numbers up front as well, that would be my advice. Inquire about his budget, ask the first money question, or just tell them that you don't want to innacurately quote and need to obtain more specifics to do a proper quote.
Just my 2 cents
- piperboytoy0
well, I did mention taht I would need more info before giving him a quote, but the last email, I was busy and just threw him a number. I regretted it after I hit the send button. Now that's been haunting me the entire weekend.
I hope he's not reading this thread.

Dude - don't come down on your price. Especially now - you'll be welcoming abuse as soon as you look desparate. Your quote sounds too low to me anyway.
I know times are tight, and I have fuckheads come undercut me on jobs all the time. Clients get what they pay for, I have more stories about the undercutters than I can list hear.
Last summer I took a cheap job. I spent 6 months in hell and didn't have enough money on the project to pay my bills. I could have spent those 6 months looking for a better client and probably could have gotten one in 2 months.
My point here... you'll get turned down more than you will get hired, just hang in there and move along. You'll be happier.

don't call.
work on finding your next client.
2k -3k for a whole site and flash?
that's low.
designers law:
the less money a client pays... the more demanding they are.
- enobrev0
i second that law.
strangest phenominon ever.
- piperboytoy0
YEAH THAT IS TRUE. I don't know what to do now. hmm, I'll sleep on taht tongiht and just wait it out. if he really wants it, he'll contact me.
- monkeyshine0
...what they said. It doesn't help now but it is true...never ever just throw out a number.
Always ask what their budget is...of course that almost always makes small biz clients look at you like you are a car salesman but that at least opens a dialog that enables you to explain services and what and why certain things cost more than others.
