I just saw a presenter from Apple at Flash Forward who showed a preview of Panther. Very impressive stuff. There is a beta out for Apples IM that allows video conferencing. They were also talking some serious #s for speed improvements with the G5s
I'm not that jealous, believe it or not. My 17" miniMe laptop is still only a month and a half old and hasn't crashed yet and I love working outdoors wirelessly.
OK, I'm jealous, but there won't be a G5 powerbook for a long time, so it's not that bad.

The G5 Powerbooks are still some time away because the chips are running too hot at the moment , apparently.
This will be my first Apple Computer but I always try to buy the best available and so went the whole way and got a G5 instead of a G4 based iMac or Powerbook. I was going to get a iPod too that I keep hearing so much about but the budget for that was spent on an Apple Car plan.

damn paul smith... you must have the Green Coming our your Ears
- paulsmith0
It set me back just over £3000 and that was even using Higher Education discounted rates. Not sure what it would be in US dollars.

about 5000+
damn...

im not jealous.
when you use 100% of the capabilities, call me.
- CyBrainX0
I hear you about buying the best. You spend more, but can keep it longer. Speed is life in these cases. Honestly, I didn't know G5s were coming out until a few weeks after I bought my Powerbook.
I queer thing is that I bought my G3 in August of 1999, two weeks before the G4s were released. You should have seen how pissed I was then.
- paulsmith0
The simple fact that I probably wont be able to use 100% of it's capabilities is why I bought it. ;-)
It sucks when your machine is trying but failing to run at 120% of it's capabilities. Getting a G5 has ensured I wont be at that stage for some time to come.

LOL Cy.

You can use 100% of its capabilities if you have a large Photoshop file. If you work in After Effects or any 3D package, you're really using 100%. It's not that hard at all to reap the benefits of a fast Mac.

2 gigs of ram crunching a ps file?
maybe if you are running the "clouds" filter
:D
- paulsmith0
I was going to go for 4 gigs of ram but that would have added another grand to the price so I didn't think it was worth it... I can always upgrade in the future.

Man, everyone with a G5 is going to be a GREAT designer once they have it.
- paulsmith0
Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there mg33 ?
- paulrand0
I beg to differ--since i got my new G5, my design has improved 158%

'm still waiting for the G5 mug.

yah paulsmith, yah you do. :)
I know someone whose graphic skills and ideas were for shit, but once he was getting a G4 you could tell he felt good things were going to happen, like it would be a total surge of talent. Same thing with the titanium laptop.
I am happy to say, though, that where this person is now in what they do is due to learning stuff about design and such, and not just because of pricey computers that everyone knows PC's are better than. :Dokay, let er rip!

I'd take the 5G instead of the G5.
