before you enter somebody's house you have to knock or ring the door bell

and alot of the time you gotta let ppl know they are about to be thrown into the flash/qtime plugin.
otherwise- yep, pointless.

kill the enter page...
do a better job of determining what the use has and accommodate them...
its not that hard...

Its good for some situations.
For example, we do work in English and Japanese, and although we can determine that a user is on a Japanese OS with Japanese enabled browser, in Japan, they may not read Japanese, and they may want to select English.
There are many situations where its useful and there are many situations where it is pointless.
But yes, I agree, most people use it for no reason at all.

"before you enter somebody's house you have to knock or ring the door bell"
that's retarded - you probably don't want 10,000 unique people a day walking into your home. That's whay you put up a door and door bell to keep the majority of the people out, and screen those who come in.
i like it when people i don't know come right into my web site and find what they want. i don't like it when people i don't know come into my house and find what they want.

my int3rwe8 page has a page at the start with no buttons or nuffink, that way aint nobody done gonna get in and steal my brilliant ideas and stylees.
My house has a door on the front which is just stuck on the wall with a sign saying "fuck off - especially witnesses.. and homos" - the real door is at the back, clever huh?

We have a news section and an enter button... just to balance it out a little.

I like the enter page. I'd know if I want to view the content by them (colors, fonts) so I can't stand it when I jump into a site and immediately start down loading a 500kb flash file.
It's a great place to showcase your logo, too :-) (that I still haven't designed)

every book needs a cover etc etc etc

Funny people are getting turned off by these now. I am a believer in getting to the content asap.
Although if your making one of those those mini-site thingyes, then I gues you need a launch page.

many sites need to inform of something and have special rquirements, so I don't know why such anger about the enter page.
- niku0
yeah, i mean it's way to hard to click that little mouse button one time in order to enter a site.

AGREED! I say no to enter pages unless necessary. I used to have one.. then suddenly one day i was like.."what the hell is this for?"
Bring on the goods.

enter pages, or cover pages are great for keeping people out. if I click your link and you want me to guess what my software config is , if I've got this or that, how the f** do I know if my plugin is what I'll need. You're the web master , you tell me, or better yet don't tell me, just give me the goods. as for multi language, you can figure that out to, if not give me one, any one, and let me change whenever I want to. cover page on the web is down there with pop up sites. at the bottom of the friendliness scale.
