dude, of course hip-hop is received as actual music. wtf are you talking about?
- JazX0
Let me quote prome4heus:
"hip-hop is what it is,
you can't take it too serious musically." It's all about it's production. It's great stuff but comparing it to other genres, where artists actually play their intstruments is just plain silly. ;)

"you can say what you want"
am having a discussion here- not trying to throw shit at you.
and alot of the hip-hop i've seen live has sounded GREAT. Loud hip hop with live mc's cant be beat.
i think we're talking about totally different styles of hip hop here... it is a very broad genre after all.
"Very few people are doing stuff that's actually going to test time. "
test time in what way? seriously- you must be listening to the wrong stuff. even the popular labels such as ninja tune have many CLASSIC albums being made that are sure to keep playing for eons.
side note: i cant stand r&b singing.

Sure thing, it's all opinionated anyway. Hmm, that's funny, most of the Hip-Hop I've heard live sounded like feedback rubbish. Hee, hee maybe I went to the wrong concerts, none recently, only saw Tribe in 1992 and Beasties in 1994, when I was a youngster still. ;)
- quamb0
but you CAN take it seriously.
there is alot of strong music driven hip hop around. to prove my point check out this track;
'all things to all men- cinematic orchestra feat. roots manuva'am barely a fan either, like all sorts of music, just finding your comments suprising.

concerts- sure, ofcourse the sound gets all reverby and droned out.
though- have rarely seen a small gig where i've noticed the sound to be poor.
- JazX0
No problem, I've just seen some of the ways that they produce it and studied some of the techniques they use and have an inside contact in the industry working in Queens, NYC, home of Hip-Hop actually. Trade shit with them sometimes. But it's all good man, just lots of people think it's this and that when it isn't. ;)

i used to hate R&B til i heard jill scott's record
- JazX0
right, small gigs will obviously be a lot better acoustically speaking for anything involving sound. they are cooler, especially if they are using actual instruments. not pre-recorded MIDI triggered sounds.
- JazX0
PS, quamb, you couldn't pay me to go to an R&B show, ouch!@

would love to see some midi/computer based hip hop live- only instrument & deck based stuff round here in melbourne.
anyhow- i understand where you're coming from a producers point of view. hey, just the same as how musicians ramble about how easy it is to write grunge with a few power chords.
though am leaning towards the live band/group or dj style stuff- which is where the 'music' side of hip hop can lay.
check that track out if you can- tell me what you think- one of my all time fave songs. yep- songs.

I agree with you, there are plenty of bands out there that play like 3 chords and fucking make a mint, which is ridiculous musically, but then again all the power to them. I never said those guys don't deserve their money. ;)
- JazX0
which track bro, I'd be glad to ;)

'all things to all men- cinematic orchestra feat. roots manuva'
you prob heard it already perhaps.
- JazX0
Nope I not big, big Hip-Hop fan, hee, hee as you probably guessed, but I like the innovative stuff especially when they play on them. Let me check that out and let you know. Thanks ;)

why no mention of graffiti?
also a huge part of hip hop.
I have to agree that the majority of hip hop music out now is pretty weak with the bling bling shit, but every now and then some gems like rakim, mos def, talib qualib come out and give credibility to an art form.
there was a time when jazz wasn't considered music either.
