loading progress bars

why do loading progress bars make you hit your back button?
Is it the size of what it is loading, or the fact that you don't like loading bars?
Not to get all psycho on anyone. But it has become so unbalanced as to how to please all of you within this design community of ours.
If someone doesn't have a pre-loader, they get crap because they didn't let you know how long it was going to take. Then if they do have one, they get crap because they are telling you how long it is going to take. Why is that?
come on man.... funk that...
(anyone else remember that song?)

i just don't care enough about ANY web site so wait for more than a couple seconds for it to load. (if it's going to be a while, by all means, use a preloader)
sorry, i'm old and jaded.

Yeah, if I am going to a designer site, I'll know by the intro fonts and the colors if it's something I want to see. There are hundreds of links a day, and maybe one out of those I'll notice.
It's all personal taste and attention span. I look for particular things (3D, nice colors, something different). I don't care for the standardized html/iframe stuff that is everywhere (like Chapter 3 ), unless I know the content is going to be great (like Chapter 3).
So get me to the good stuff quick, but make it at least seem like someone thought about it and tried a few things. If none of the above criteria is acceptable, 'click' - and my little mouse has the buttons for it, extra quick!

I guess it is personal taste.

back button? whats that? everything opens up in a new window. i just close that shit.

when I'm trying to get out of a surprise .pdf fucking link!!! I would rather force quit the shit than wait for that stupid plug-in to load!!
or when a slow as hell .asp site is trying to put a page together. get me outta here!

I can't think of any site that doesn't take a while to load. If it's not a loading bar, it's a bunch of gifs-what's the difference?

porn sites.
you know, where you have a gallery, with like 12 thumnail photo links, but no central navigation. so it's like:
*click* - amber01.jpg
*<- back*
*click* - amber02.jpg
*<- back*
*click* - amber03.jpg
etc.

"I can't think of any site that doesn't take a while to load."
this is a joke, right?
Another immeditate back button recipient is are site's that play music without being told to. If I'm listening to a CD, i don't want to hear some web site developer's favorite drum n' bass loop mixed in...
- schjetne0
connerd: I use tab and backspace for that. Much more effective. Frees up your right hand.
Keyboard shortcuts are your friend.
