"no, i'm saying that if you don't own the font but want to use it in a client's project, the client is obligated to buy it. if they refuse, you can't use that font. "
again, why even bother a client about buying a font? clients don't give a fuck about buying aoftware and fonts for YOUR tool set. they want their job done well and for a good price. To me it's bad business to even bring stupid shit like that up. you must be working on some low budget projects for the price of a font to even be a factor in your negotiations.
if anything you just wrap the $150 dollars in somewhere under "project management" or "design" and go on with your bad self.
"this isn't a morality issue, it's friggen business."
ANY money that goes into resources like fonts and software comes out of your budget. period. that's business for you.
if I was your client I would trip out a lil that you demand I buy a font, knowing full well it can be used by you over and over for other clients.

I'll whoop your ass on Soul Calibur...

i dont think you can justify stealing no mater what. If your getting paid to do a job, you should pay the royalties...
but i will put my hand up to being a thief...sometimes its hard not to be.
- lilbabyleg0
you're a li shifty. I didn't say pirated software I said illegal software install... there's a bit of a difference... and I'm not really buying the Napster "I didn't inhale" story either.... But I'll drop my accusations at that. You might actually be a high morals type of guy who knows...

babyarm, are you involved in the design industry at a professional level, or is it just a hobby for you? i'm not looking to insult you, it's totally cool if it's just a hobbie, but some of the things you say baffle me as a professional. clients paying for the fonts, stock photos, etc used in their projects is par for the course. they know it, and every working professional worth a damn in this business knows it.
- vena0
pirating software is copying and installing software you don't own a license to. where's the confusion?
as for napster, like i said many posts ago, most of what i listen to is rather obscure independant stuff. i'd have a hard time finding it in mp3 on the net even if i wanted to (i get enough mainstreme crap shoved down my throat with work). and again, like i said, if you're screwing independant artists you're a scum bag. i can see arguing for screwing the RIAA, but independants actually need that support.
- lilbabyleg0
yes. I am a professional designer and in seven years of working at design studios and record labels and now operating my own studio, I have never seen a client asked to buy a font. I guess in my neck of the woods the budgets are so handsome that troubling a client over a dinky font, that I will own ever after, is just too nickel and dimey.
and stock photos are a whole different animal. They cost A LOT more than a fucking font and they have time limits on usage... but then again I don't use stock photography so I haven't seen all the deals out there.

so what's the difference between noting a font on your budget and informing the client, and having a budget that's large enough to include the font?
you're going from advocating stealing fonts to saying you include the price in your budget.
- lilbabyleg0
so you are saying that screwing mainstream RIAA type shit is okay but screwing independants is not? so you are semi-moral? stealing is ok sometimes? I will agree with you there. I even buy software from small software shops etc... Screentime, Macopener but Quark? Fuck QUARK!
just what type of obscure music do you listen to that's not available on file sharing programs?
- vena0
no, i said exactly what i mean - i can see arguing screwing the RIAA.
I can't find music like Prick, Wolfsheim, and And One on kazaa. that makes me sad.
- vena0
and before you ask, i have kazaa for the same reason any other self-respecting male in their mid 20's does...
porn.
- numero10
yeah and u can't find sean summers music either.

or the intro music for the sitcom Alf

The difference is you gave the impression that you were holding the price of the font over the client's head like if they don't pay for it they don't get it... I just choose to hide the cost or eat it (cuz I know I can't justify charging for a font that I will use agian sometime). But that's the way I do business... maybe I DO have some morals after all!
But to tell you the truth I rarely if ever use new fonts... I have a set library of fonts that I use religiously because I know them well and they are timeless IMHO.
I personally don't use clip art or new fonts... again my point was your pontificating. THAT'S what I was tired of...
- vena0
of course i'm pontificating, i'm telling people not to do something on the board i moderate :)
- unfittoprint0
vena, try soulseek. number #1 p2p for the independent music listener.

- lilbabyleg0

- vena0
