How do they draw these? Do they draw by hand and then scan it in for coloring, or is there a specific architect program?

in photoshop, go to file>export>skyscraper.
seriously though, i would think they are hand drawn. probably based upon a scan of blueprints or a photo.

That's got to be the best site I've ever seen! Brilliant!

Hm... I wonder if they would use something like Illustrator to do the coloring?

I hope you're kidding.
It's obvious that those are not drawn by hand. They're definatly done on computer, I wouldn't be surprised if their 2D shots from AutoCad.

Well I don't know anything about architecture, so I was taking an educated guess.
I mean, I've used AutoCAD before, but I didn't think you could have so much colored detail.

using shade function from AutoCad. 'Print' the drawing using a 'plot-to-jpg' Autodesk's drivers.

It can be done by hand for sure, I've done things like that when I studied architecture.
But no matter if it's architecture or product drawings or something else, it shouldn't be too hard to notice the aspects that are likely from a computer. The shadows and the gradients on alot of those buildings gives that away.
nice link too, btw. I've seen skyscrapers.com before but not that site.

I reckon they are done by hand.

The thing is, I've seen some of my fellow students create some masterful gradients and shadows by hand (mainly gradients), which has caused me to take a second look at things.

I'm not saying they're not good, or that stuff done by hand can't be top quality and extremely detailed, but those just don't have a look of being done by hand. There would be something lost in a scan that would be obvious, I think.
Plus, these are actual buildings, so there are definatly in some form of 3d construction format from AutoCad, MicroStation, etc. and making a 2d rendering from such a thing is not difficult to do.
