photoshop batch resize logic

I want to resize a whole directory full of images. I want the greatest dimension to be 500px. Can you use that kind of logic in a photoshop action?
If width>height then resize width to 500, else resize height to 500
know what I mean? I know photoshop does this as part of it's "slideshow".. but I don't need the slide show.. just the resized images...

I do this in Image Ready, but I guess Photoshop does the same things...
If you have an existing Action that sets a fixed width in pixels, just double-click the resize part of the Action in the Actions pallette... you'll see a whole bunch of options... you can set it to resize to a maximum dimension of width or height (i.e. vertical images will be resized to say 480x640, and horizontal 640x480)

hmm, in photoshop when I click on that I get the same dialog that 'image resize' gives me. No other options. In imageready there is a check box for 'Action options' then below that a dropdown that says 'Fit Image By:' is that what you mean?

yeah, that does it, cool...
but now I ran into another issue.. I used "save optimized" in the action.. and when I execute the action on another file it wants to replace the original instead of saving it in the new directory I specified when recording the action.. same thing for "save optimized as.."

You need to specify the destination folder in the Batch Options (see the arrow up the top right of the pallete for the menu with batch and droplet options)
You should also explore the save options in Preferences...

ok, I see... thanks ribit!
anyone handy with applescript? I wanted to use this action as part of a script.
I can tell photoshop (or imageready) to run a script.. but I can't pass in a path to save the image in... right? anyone know any workarounds?

ok, another question...
imageready actions..
I see 'batch options' for certain settings... but I don't see how to execute an action on a directory..why the hell did they split up these functions.. it's rather annoying...

look up droplets in imageReady's help file its all in there. I'm not sure why they split this up so much either. Now I have a question, is fireworks batch processing cappabilities as powerful or moreso than imageReady's?
- ribit0
Definitely make Droplets of your Actions! ... then you just grab a folder full of images, drag it to the Droplet..and it processes and saves to your specified directory...

ahhh... droplet.. nice.. that looks really handy
Sorry I don't know fireworks..
but if anyone was interested in that applescript question it looks like graphic converter may be a better choice.. you can make thumbnails with it, and tell it where to save them...

you might want to look at iView Media Pro too: http://www.iview-multimedia.com
Image cataloging, slide shows with lots of options, contact sheet generation, HTML gallery generation using totally custom HTML templates and custom tags, export listings as text, IPTC image annotation, reads all digital camera data fields..etc... (it's nice)

did I mention it does batch renaming too?
oh, and multiple image sets within a single catalog using color labels..
and launches helper apps...
