How does it compare with Muller-Brockman's Grid System? Compatible, or different, or influenced you think?

tufte is definitely a force when it comes to information graphics. His work provides great examples of heirarchy (especially heirarchy I think) and structure that is both logical and innovative. I think any designer could benefit from tufte and his work.

*BUMP*
Going to see this guys "Presenting Data and Information" seminar in michigan tomorrow..... clearly not a well covered topic on NT it seems.

If you are in any way concerned with quantitative/information graphics/design then you really should read his books...because he is tops....

His essay on PowerPoint is brilliant--I gave it to all the marketing people to try and get them to abandon it entirely.
- jevad0
powerpoint is the anti-christ
- atomica0
true that...
so did your marketing team abandon it?
- monstress0
Actually, they are sort of trasistioning away from it here and there--I am making a lot of print pieces that are basically PP presentions on paper, but it's a start.

Cool, I'm pretty excited about the seminar.... simply for the experience..... not to mention its a free day from the everyday work-ness.
- monstress0
I'm hoping to get my office to spring for one of the conferences, too, maybe they'll even buy me the books...

I saw him last year in Los Angeles, some of the best money I've ever spent. He's great in person, I hope he plays for you the visual classical music thingy. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
- atomica0
Glad to hear a good experience. Yeah monstress my boss has all of his books and I had the chance to browse through them this past week, some really good stuff, and sometimes some horribly common sense stuff, but looks good.

He has a few smaller booklets for sale as well, essays and such. He is good at breaking down the thinking behind his work, really thorough.

i LOVE tufte for this reason-
them:
"that looks boring, can you make it more interesting? maybe add some drop-shadows, make the stoke thicker, or put some graffiti drips on it?"me:
"i'm sorry, although that sounds fun and all, i really can't. that would go against every one of the basic principles of information design laid out in tufte."

I got to see his seminar in Boston, he played the visual classical music thingy, I liked it but was worndering what that thing would look like playing some metal.
I would definetly recommend going.

Just got back from a day with tufte. the whole seminar thing. It was really great, he's my number one design oriented presenter now. The man knew what he was doing, was impeccably resourceful, and well versed. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone in the design or marketing field. Long day, but it was good to give my brain that much exercise once again.
