and that is "lighting" not "lightning".
thank you.

With Cinema you should be able to use Radiosity, which I would recommend, esp. with what you are describing. It takes longer but well worth it. Cinema has a pretty good rendering engine.

indeed go for radiosty + hdr images... it's awesom, looks like the well-known "stormtrooper" lightwave images... just type in google hdr & cinema 4d

thanks mbr.
definetly along the lines of what I'm looking for. By the way, really nice 3d vis.anyone else got any books or something like mbr's links?
thanks again.

thanks for the help rizon. I'm reading up on HDR images right now. Got a question though. How does photoshop handle these? I believe these are 16-bit images but photoshop doesn't recognize the .hdr file format.
Is it as simple as changing the file extension? What should I do to avoid downloading HDRshop?thanks again.

Thanks.
I'd suggest working on the radiosity firts, before moving onto hdri. Radiosity will keep your hands full for a while, esp. with the amount of time involved. hdri are great (although I still havne't found a need/time to do it, not to mention you have to make sure it's even supported without a plugin). You'll get fantastic images without it.
But if someone knows that it's less complicated than setting up regular lights with radiosiy, I am all ears...

Thought I'd let you know...I just got my new issue of 3D World and there is a tutorial/info about hdr lighting for Cinema.

hdr is in my eyes much more simple, no spots are necessary...
Add a Sky object to your scene and apply the HDR Shader material to it
Add some objects to your scene. If you use a floor or plane object for your objects to sit on, you might want to use a render tag to prevent that object from casting shadows so it doesn't block the light data coming from the lower part of the HDR Shader.
Enable radiosity in the Render Settings and make sure you turn off the auto light!...You can find alot of hdr images on the net als look at lightwave they also supprot hdr.
to make the images, you need software which is only available for pc. but there are plenty on the net, you don't see the picture it just gives a certain mood & reflection to your objects...

just found an alternative for the hdr shop...

the new website is almost ready, but no new 3d's yet... actually a while ago a made a switch to lightwave, i had the feeling the modelling tools in cinema were just not as agood & accurat as in lightwave... but this is like starting from zero... i love the rendering in cinema but was not pleased with the modelling... so it probably will take a while before i've finished a project... the model i have in mind is really complicated... next to the fact my mac is way too slow for the hdr rendering, it takes ages... hoping mac will release some huge power progress in june...

Rizon - That's good to know. I knew it was inevitable that I would have to switch and learn it, I just haven't had the need or time. But if it's really that simple, that's great.
I've seen adds for hdr images for sale that look nice. How particular does the image have to be? I am just wondering if finding a perfect image will be a challenge (I am lighting an interior of a condo right now, at about 2 PM, for example, so the 'mood' has to be what the client wants, not me).
Will you have examples up on your new site? Let us know when it's up.

hey thanks mbr and rizon.
I'm trying the radiosity and hdr right now. HDRshop seems to be working pretty well to edit the images.
this has completely changed the way i'm thinking about lighting in Cinema.
this rocks!
thanks again.
