I need to create a database on a CD-Rom, It has to be usable on Direcotr or flash.
I was thinking about XML, but is there a better way ? easier, like mysql ?
thanks

stop smoking crack. xml is the only way to go on cd-rom.

or access...but i hate access.
:)
if you were to build your cd-rom with something like delphi, you can use the interbase db on cd.
of course, with any choice, the only way to update the db is to re-write/append the newest version to the cd.
xml is the way to go, especially if the db isn't dynamic.

there are a number of database xtras for director if you go that route.
i researched a few but it was 2 years ago, so i can't be of specific help.
XML would be much more compatable with everything else out there though... you could write a script to create the XML structure from any existing database, and vise versa.
plus flash and director both parse it.

any good examples of director parsing XML, and is there another way of parsing instead of child... Can you acces the tag directly without having to go to the child of the child... ?
thanks a lot

you could try using xpath, namespaces or simple ids? but i don't know how well it will work within director, and i don't know how many lines of extra code you might have to devise.

the XML parsing with childrens and younguns and such really wasnt that bad after i wrote some lingo to do it.
this may be a bit obvious, or it may not... all you do is write it as a function so you can use it again and again.
like i said its been a few years since i sold a complexe director project, so i am super rusty. :(

do you still have an example file, that might help. thanks...

no, it was rom based, and i cant give the code out. sorry, non disclosure.

im sure i learned how on http://www.director-online.com
check that, should be a tasty little tutorial on there.

hm, you can program a database in lingo. But I don`t know if its the best way cause of compatibilty when you will using the database in other applications

I think for a static database XML is still the best way if you're going to deploy these thing in a CD-ROM
