so this broad calls me up and says she wants me to do an educational medical cd rom. no prob. i can do that. and i dont even have to design it. but i might be capturing some video for it too. mmmm how much do i charge for something like that. I know she cant find anyone else to do it so as long as i don't give her some crazy price she'll probably go with it. it'll probably take one weekend of just sitting down and doing it, but i told her it'll take 3 weeks.

I would be chargin about £25 an hour - and it would take me say....5 somplete days...so thats...£1000...which is...about $1,600....
- jevad0
ah - I missed the 'no design' bit...knock off a bit - call it 800
- shellie0
even though i have to capture video and program the whole thing? are you serious is that what people are charging?
- unknown0
I'd go in at $5,000 -see what she says.
but then what the fuck do I know, not much to go on
- jevad0
I guess I'm just not very greedy - I'd be worried about scaring off clients as the market is still dead quiet...I dunno...ask them for a couple grand then and see what they say....

if you are programming LINGO or AS, charge minimum 30-40 dollars an hour and quote realistic hours.
if it is a cut and dry assembly project, and you can do it in a weekend, figure $500 a day for 3 days - $1500.
also, if this is one of your first freelance jobs, consider lowering this number. fishing for repeat business is good sense for starters and pros alike.

eh.. im not worried about repeat buisness with this lady. Her design company sucks. She told me she makes web comps in quark. uggggggg. She's all "will quark files work for you?" and im all "NO"
i need 3500 so i can pay off some stuff so thats what i asked for.
- Gorbie0
Exactly!
Look at your credit statement first... and let that will dictate your quote.

Shellie,
35 hondo it is then, I tend to price things like that also.

i just signed a contract for pretty much the same thing. they take the video and compress it themselves then give it to me and i put it into a cd rom package. i have to design the cd though. they're a medium size company and i charged them $8000. they said "we were expecting to pay 10"
DOH!!!!!
- robotron3k0
yeah, i would say around 5k, but since you won't have to do design 3,500 sounds good and could make up for any unforseen problems... it's crazy but the more you charge the more respect you get...
- Gorbie0
If they have a three letter abbreviation at the end of their name... charge an extra $3-5k
- robotron3k0
see shellie... and you thought your sister had all the fun!!!
- jevad0
fuckin a - I need to up my prices.....

well it might turn out to be a nightmare. When i heard quarkfile comps my jaw clinched. thats really weird for something like this. if they give me even one quark file or really messy photoshop files where i basically have to recreate things, im charging them extra.
if they design the photohop comps at 300 dpi im charging them extra. if i have to do any extra work besides capture video and build this sucker... gerrrr
any weird revisions, i'll charge them more. this broad is friends with one of my old sony art directors that was a PAIN in the neck. i assume this lady is just as huge on an idiot as her sony art director friend. that art director was notorious for web comps done in quark in cymk and then making me fix her mess. ugg im not looking forward to this project but i need the money sooo bad.
- jevad0
what are you gonna do the cd in?
- robotron3k0
eeeww.... kinds does sound like an ugly baby, possibly a print design person that does not know web... those are the worst because they claim ignorance and give you crappy stuff, if you haven't already gotten back with her, you might want to think about giving her a quote until you see the condition the comps are in... or better yet tell her if she want you to go over it and "tighten" it up you charge 1,500 more... give her a scaled rate... just a thought... ;)

hi friend.
quoting projects can be the hardest thing in an independent designers life. there are a few guidelines that i follow in my practice:
1. establish my hourly rate, and estimate how long it would take me in hours. use that to generate a flat rate.
2. but before that, try to get her to give you a complete spec...how much stuff she wants in that, what features, anything that might be considered "overhead expenses".
3. be willing to negotiate. perhaps allow the client to pay in installments or barter for goods, services, or promotion if that seems appropriate.
Otherwise, everything else I know comes from experience and I am still learning.
My golden rule though is to not accept less than i know its worth in terms of product value or my time. it hurts me, and all other designers out there trying to get they hustle on when someone charges $200.00 for a flash site that does not work properly.

CONTRACTS,CONTRACTS,CONTRACTS!
They will save your ass. Book her for 3500, then create clauses in the CONTRATC about having to recreate objects, redesign stuff, basically make a parachute so that if the client throws you out into an impossible void with aliased 72 dpi crap, or shitty video, you'll get paid for it to be redone. I cannot stress that enough.

once did that for a Uni, very little design to it, jes' dropping content on a cdrom (loads of timewasting videocompressing sessions tho).. they had only $1,000,- budget for it..
few months later they landed me a $18,000 job.
it's all about who you deal with, and delivering good works and stay honest about it! g'luck!
