what's a good tablet to get for a beginner?

I've got one that's pretty old and haven't seen any new ones around. Have they changed much? Or is it still the same basic technology?
I know mine's pretty cool for making illustrations and photoshop work, but what else do you do guys with them?

what else is there to do with it?

If you have the A4 or bigger you can turn the mouse of and assign specific commands to the 15 buttons! and use the pen to draw. Never needing to us the keyboard. Ideal when touching up photos..

is an A4 enough? is there a big difference between the A4 and the A4+? workwise

Size isn't everything with tablets , but everyone will always want bigger. An A5 is more than adequate for most day-to-day tasks.

i love using a tablet. the mouse sucks indeed. that is really a piece of crap (i think i threw it in the trash or something). size wise i do think a bigger one is nicer depending on what you do. i've got the smallest one and sometimes it bothers me. you really have to get used to it though. i hated it first but after a while i started loving it. it's a lot faster than making all those mouse miles. plus you have pen pressure which basically means that you can influence the thickness of lines in photoshop, illustrator etc. i would recommend a tablet though. the smallest one is pretty cheap too.

I have one that is four years old. An 18x18 i think. It's big! It was one of the old serial connector types and Wacom converted it to USB for 150 bucks. I checked out the newer pads and didn't see much difference so the $150 made sense. After I got my TiBook I haven't used it much though. It's way to big to use with the 'Book. Still have it hooked up to my souped up Beige g3. Have to use it next week for and illustration job I just got.
Get one and try it out. I think you'll like it.

I have the Graphire 2 and I really like it for drawing but as for using it for vector work... I can't pull that one off. Don't need the biggest one too... Try with the cheapest one (graphire 2) and you'll see.

new ones cost abot 100$

i have the 6x8
i dont think any bigger is necessary. if its too large you move your hand around too much.
the only thing i dislike is putting the pen down to type and picking it back up again. i wish it would levetate :)
