What's going on nowadays? Do people still prefer splash pages to let them know they're entering a flash site? Or would they rather the loading begin?
- stinger0
i'd rather see a splash before any loadin occurs ...its like a welcome rug ..

Ive never seen the point in a splash page. Why have an enter button when you've just typed in the url??!?!? Instant site is best.... in my opinion anywayzz

bump. Tie score. Any tippers?
- JazX0
get rid of splashes
- Bluejam0
Slash the splash.
Load away.

3-no, 1-yes
dangitall. I just finished the splash...
Wait, what if the user has an option of Flash or HTML?
- Bluejam0
HTML if they aint got the plugin?
- Mountain0
Use a sniffer script to detect for Flash. If they don't have it, go to HTML.
But make absolutely sure you've got a link to the HTML side (and vice versa) so you don't piss people with low bandwidth off (if it's a high band site)...
And no to the splash...

It depends, if I'm about to load a 2 mb flash file, I want to know that.
A while back, "splash pages" were just giving a hint on what you're about to see and you had options on how you could make the site suit you better. Lots of graphics and a tiny enter-button hidden somewhere is just stupid, but if you're throwing a huge file, warn'em!

No, please don't.
I like splashes that are included into the main page, but do not take up the page and require click through.
A good example of exceptible pratices in this matter is http://www.ifctv.com/

I agree with Jox but, christ, why would a client accept a 2mb preload in the first place?
If it's for your own site and you're pimping it to prospects / employers, think again. I'd click you off in a second, and I have DSL so waits aren't as bad for me as dialups.
And the ICFTV link lasted two seconds... WTF is up with that music? Nothing like listening to stuff in headphones and then hearing some tinny POS music loop blaring in my ears. Shite. Although the site was well laid out I didn't get any farther than that. Sorry for starting to jack the thread. I'm finished the rant now.

sometimes the popup window pops up behind the splash page and you have to look for it
- bob0
I do not like the music loops either. Please except my comments minus the music.
Maybe http://www.fork.de does it better, with the flash headers.

What about the ultrashock-type splash? If you're visiting for quick information, flash is a waste of time, right?
O, wait...you were saying that while the flash is loading there should be a "HTML Only" link...so a splash in that format would be superfluous, right?
- Mountain0
I'd offer the 'Go to HTML' link the whole way through, outside of the Flash movie. Some people just don't like using Flash b/c a Flash site usually doesn't function like a 'normal' site (ie. no back button, frequently no copy and paste, etc. etc.).
If you can swing it, try and make a preloader that doesn't look like a preloader. I can't think of any examples right now but imagine something like Kurt Noble Inc.'s site for the Army (?) without any loading. Reuse symbols, use vectors and stuff to make it look like something more interesting than a preload bar or percentile counter. Unless that's what's wanted...
And I like the Ultrashock splash. It's pretty neat and I've never tired of it for some reason. But that's one of the few...
Re. the Fork example in the post previous. That's way better. Fork's site is full rad. Knock all the buildings down in one of the sections for wallpaper!

don't make me click to enter your site. fullstop.
- peanuts0
i think splashes are great. its like a introduction to the whole site.
- lyrek0
era404: I like your splash page. Sets the tone to the site pretty well. Also good idea to give peeps a html and flash version.
generally, tho, I'd agree that they may not be necessary. just an extra click, y'know? :)
