using win XP and just wondering exactly what this stuff is.
ok, in the task manager, ya know how you got the performance tab... ok, the "PF Usage" or "Page File Usage History". what exactly is that?
and what about the "Commit Charge?
my new computer is running reaaaaally slow, and i am trying to figure out why.
any help is great. any slanderous remarks regarding my character or bodily functions are also (as always) most welcome.

the page file is basically your 'virtual memory'. the size of the page file is usually default at 1.5 times (size) the amount of ram you have. it simply extends the amount of memory you have.
the cool thing about the page file is it can be edited to fit your needs.
the page file is very important to the preformance of you xp box.
you can change the size of the page file (since it is a 'file' on the harddrive and not physical memory (ram)) to allow for better performance.

hey sp, (is this shawn?)
thanks for answering!
that is exactly what i was wanting to know. i am reading thru that stuff right now.ive been bothered bc i just got a brand new machine and it is running painfully slow. i cant figure out why. it has a 1.7mh, 128 RAM (about to be 512), 40 gigs hd space, and blah blah. so the box should be running pretty smoothly (even though i dont have all the RAM installed yet).
my PF usage has been running really high and i have been trying to figure out what the hell that means or if that could be part of the problem.
anyway, thanks for hitting me back! and if this IS shawn, then it is good to see you 'round again!

also, something you may want to do, is set your page file to automatically clear on reboot.
this is easily done with a little registry hacking.
go start->run->regedit [enter]
click down through the directories as below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESSystemCurrent...
then edit the entry "ClearPageFileAtShutdown"
when you double click on it, change the"0" to "1" and exit regedit.
:)
then, everytime you shutdown and restart you begin with a fresh pagefile.

it is, and thanks... :)

damn...for some reason, nt didn't like the "" (back slash) in between all those directories...
hm...it's pretty self-explanitory, though...you'll see.
:)
