Hi, I was just checking http://www.reinvigorate.net/syst… and it list visitor's monitor resolution.
Some of them seem extremely large. like 2560 x 1024 and 2800 x 1050. I know these settings are rare, but when I redesign my site, should I keep them in mind? any thoughts?
I've been working for a while now, and we still optimize our sites to fit 800x600 please don't laugh at me.
thanks in advance

1024*768, but I still design for 800*600 to be safe. our users are not very savvy.

design for 2800? hell no.
if you want to be ahead of the curve, you wait for everyone to catch up. word up.

i generally design sites for 800x600 depending on the client.
my work resolution is 1024
my home is 1152.my best friend keeps his computer set for 800x600. every time i visit him, i change it just to piss him off.
he says the text is too small. he has a 19" monitor. heheh.

Personally, for design related sites I generally design them for 1024x768, otherwise I go for 800x600. Keep in mind the stats on reinvigorate are slightly skewed as most people that use the site are designers (and therefore tend to be in larger resolutions)

thanks Sean, that is an amazing site you did. I have that set as my homepage now! word!
Thanks for all your replies.

I really have an issue with this...
I'm on 1024, 'cause I work from a laptop. I'm aware that most idiots out there use 800. And I just finished a site that I designed for 800X600 resolution.
However, I decided that's the last time I'll do it. People are never going to get bigger monitors or set them to greater resolutions unless they get sick and tired of scrolling and not seeing everything on the browser. It's a little bit of tough love. They'll hate it, but they'll come around and thank you later.
Why do we have to design for the lowest common denominator when we're cheating people who have invested in better equipment to enjoy the experience better?
And the shit about the small text, is just crap. You can increase or decrease the size of the text with your browser (at least with IE).Unless it's flash of course.

I agree chil. My friends has there monitor still set at 800x600 and it's so annoying. everything is big and ugly. I also set them higher and they get pissed off too.

800X600 and lower should be illegal unless you're legally blind

800*600 wouldn't so bad if you actually had that at your disposal... trouble is with browsers big menus etc. it eats it all up... so when you do a 1024 * 768 site, it may as weel be a 800*600 full-screener!

It's the kind of thing to keep you up at night!

1440x900
crazy super-wide 17" laptop
but i design for 800x (width 772px to allow for mac ie at 8x6)

I do what the client wants. makes the most sense to me. I try not to take it personally.
just send me my fucking check.

always target the lowest common denominator...
i design all my sites for the idiots who refuse to set their resolution higer than 800 X 600. love it or hate it, 800 X 600 is the most widely used resolution.
such a shame... but think about all the grandmas out there...
personally, i keep my flat screen at 1280 X 1024.
peace

all the grandmas are going to die soon anyway. They're just holding progress still. If they can't read the text "cause it's too small" then they should make it bigger on their browser.
And if gramma keeps seeng sites that are adjusted to her ridiculous resolution, then she'll never change the settings or get a bigger monitor.
That's similar to saying I should design with users of Netscape 1 in mind because there's a large population of African pigmys who use them.
Well, I say FUCK THEM. Get with the motherfucking times. And it's not even an issue of economic disadvantage since MOST people can set their monitor to 1024.

i use 1600x1200 ... but when it comes to client, i always use 800x600 as the standard ... check this out .. might help ya .. http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNe…
- piperboytoy0
1600 x 1200 seems so big. my site looks like a postage stamp!

have you tried using the text size feature on a site coded using CSS text sizes???
it doesn't work...and it's a royal-fucking-pain-in-the-ass...
I still use the font tag, just for that very reason...
as for the subject... 800x600 is still the thing... but 640 users should be able to use it... eg, no wacky frames that don't scroll and mess everything up for that resolution.

1600 x 1200, but I assume 800 x 600

I design on 1024x768 at home (stupid no spanning on iBook), and 1280x1024 at school (17" LCD). I have a peecee with 1280x1024. My next will probably be either a widescreen 20" LCD or aa 17" iMac... widescreen is so killer for designing, and watching movies!
Always design for 800x600, or use a trick to detect resolution.
People are paying you to do design, so you've got an obligation to make their site available to everyone.
If its personal work, design for a jumbotron... but i will hit the back button before it finishes loading
