I've noticed some hostility towards dreamweaver. Is this also the case with DW ultradev (or that type of functionality in DW MX).
I mean if I want to learn more about dynamic conent and stuff, is ultradev the wrong way to begin?

It's a start anyway.

I've been using DW for static html pages and I always felt I knew enough to keep control over the code that DW produced.
But I know nothing about databases and such so I'm afraid I will become like a frontpage user in that area...

ummm notepad is OK if you're doing basic HTML. If you doing more than just a basic page layout you need something to help it along. I dunno about anyone else, but building dynamic sites on deadlines doesn't allow me to be a "purist". I think it's laughable that people still bring this up

It's a great tool, go through the tutorials that come w/the program. Also the forum :
http://groups.google.com/groups?…
And the Macromedia exchange:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusio…
are great resources. With those resources you should be able to do anything.

oh and to answer the original post... DW Ultra Dev really over complicates its coding in regard to data access. The best way to learn asp or php would be to visit one of the many good tutorials, or go and buy any book from Wrox press on the subject

Thanks everyone, I think I got what I needed.
I borrowed a friends of ed book on ultradev so maybe I'll start in that end anyhow.
