"When a person is troubled, it's better not to think about it, but to keep busy with more cheerful things.
Although the electronic age makes official surveillance easier, people who haven't done anything wrong shouldn't be worried.
Abstract art that doesn't represent anything shouldn't be considered art at all.
No one can feel naturally homosexual."

Economic Left/Right: -7.03
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -7.50I found those questions very interesting, and the reading list is a good one too... Not to mention the graph plotting UK political leaders' ideological shifts in recent years.
Thanks for the link!

I don't think people at the other end of the scale would be so interested in doing the questionnaire?
- lnu0
Maybe not that funny to find yourself up there with Hitler and Thatcher...
- CyBrainX0
I sent this poll to two groups of friends and asked them to respond. One group is fairly conservative and the other a mixed bag. No responses yet.
I thought many of the questions were funny and some scared me, thinking how some people would answer them.

Inu, regarding the "Funny questions:"
"When a person is troubled, it's better not to think about it, but to keep busy with more cheerful things."
This is about the Brave New World idea that the masses should be kept in a mild state of contentment - that way they will be docile and will not question the authorities too deeply. I BNW people are compulsorily sedated with a drug called "soma" - I believe that television is the drug of choice in our society.
"Although the electronic age makes official surveillance easier, people who haven't done anything wrong shouldn't be worried."
This is about the way our civil liberties are being eroded in the name of "security".
"Abstract art that doesn't represent anything shouldn't be considered art at all."
That's quite a reactionary statement, but one that is still very prevalent. It doesn't encourage people to use their imaginations and make new connections when looking at abstract art, preferring to reinforce the passive consumption of "realistic" entertainment delivery systems like TV, where all the opinions are pre-made and there is no time to digest and reflect.
"No one can feel naturally homosexual."
There is mounting evidence that homosexuality has always been part of humanity, ie that it is "natural", but conservatives routinely propagate the idea that homosexuality is "unnatural".
- lnu0
Yeah, I got the questions, I just didn't think you could associate them so easily with certain political directions (or quadrants :).
BTW, that surveillance thing is a bit tricky.
- vespa0
My opinions are libertarian left so not the only possible interpretation of those Qs :)
yea the surveillance one is tricky, and also scary. There is a law that is in the process of being passed in the UK at the moment regarding ISPs being required by law to keep copies of everyones' emails. For me, that's like the post office making copies of my letters. I don't like it.
