right now im using php to develop stuff for the web.
ive been talking to someone in the office that is always singing the praises of coldfusion mx because of the new remoting capabilities with flash.
is anyone using coldfusion here? is it easier to integrate coldfusion and flash than it is to integrate php with flash?
what about other languages ie (ASP, JSP) ? weve been talking about using them but i cant see the use for projects that aren't really huge
i know it probably wouldn't be hard to pick up coldfusion but i think JSP would be a steep learning curve from what ive heard of the language
any thoughts? whats your language of choice?

The new Coldfusion server for Flash seems great. But for other stuff that does not involve Flash, i would still use PHP/MySQL.

*bump*

php/mysql purely for the power/ease of use. Its a lot more forgiving than anything else with your code, and there is a pre-existing function for just about everything you could ever want to do.

i prefer ASP and MS SQL Server, lots of help and docs out there if you need it.

yeah breeding i hear ya, i would like to have a play with PHP but my boss does everything the Microsoft way, so none of our hosting supports PHP, we have no PHP books, none of the other developers use it, so im fucked....woteva

You don't need to use Coldfusion to use Flash Remoting MX. It also supports .NET and a few other services. If you really want to learn something new, .NET is a FAR better choice than coldfusion.
But I'm not even sure what you can do with Remoting MX that you can't do with PHP/MySQL.Flash and a little bit of cleverness.
Anyone explain what Remoting MX does? I've looked over the product site and I still don't really get it.

I find macromedia have a great way of describing their products which leaves you utterly dumbfounded as to what the f--- they are.

more difficult/expensive to find ColdFusion hosting too.
CFML is a swell language though.
cant help you with the MX server question though, we had a hell of a time installing it at my old job, and the powers that be finally gave up...

If you want to learn PHP, screw your boss. There are so many hosts out there that offer cheap, cheap hosting. Grab a tiny little account for a few bucks a month and start learning on your own.
If you already know ASP, you won't need any books. You just need to learn some new syntax and a couple of functions. As others pointed out, http://www.php.net is the best resource you'll ever find, for about any language.

ColdFusion is way easier than PHP and ASP. Those that say differently obviously have never coded CF.
As for hosting. I use http://www.ReadyHosting.com
$99/year. pretty good deal if you ask me.
yes, coldfusion is great with flash, but it is great without it too. and, you don't need to buy the product, you just need to have a CF host.
see macromedia's site for CF example sites.
a big site i work on:
http://www.plasticsurgery.orga site i think is pretty cool:
http://www.designwithinreach.com…as for Remoting.... yes, still have no clue.

just like php and asp, there are tons of coldfusion applications that you can use for free. check macromedia's developer area for details.
i'm not against php ... (maybe against asp), but coldfusion isn't a bad option.

Personally I use ASP and MSXML4.0. I use the ASP for the DB connection and pulling stuff out... then I create a serverside XML file which call from Flash...
This does have its draw backs as its a long winded process. But it's pretty solid...

also, im wondering if anyone can recommend a really tight method for receiving data from php in flash.
right now im using loadVariables which is alright but there are some downfalls.
i want to switch to loadVars object but i cant find any solid examples.
can anyone recommend books / sites that deal specifically with flash + php + mysql integration?
thanks!

On Saturday another NTer emailed me an FLA with this all set up, worked real nice.
I can email it to you later today.
When loading a large set of variables, am I the only one that finds they do something like:
frame 1:
loadcheck = "";
loadVariables("blah.php", "");frame 2:
play();frame 3:
if (loadcheck == "") {
gotoAndPlay(2);
}

I was using CFML with Allaire Studio in 1999. I stopped using it and haven't gone back to it, but Macromedia took it over and changed a few things. I think it does in fact combine with Macromedia Tools very well though, especially using Flash Remoting which allows for easier integration of Flash content with ColdFusion MX, MS.Net, Java, etc.

yea noneck...if you could email me the .fla it would be grealy appreciated :)
if you have anything that uses the loadVars object that would be even better (because using loadVars object you have more options for checking data and modularity)
