I know this is a numbnuts question, but are .png's pretty safe to use these days [on the web]? Do any of you lads use 'em?
- jox0
In SWF's yes. I don't see a reason to use them on static html pages, maybe I've missed something?
- JazX0
no use really, why not convert to .gif?

It would be awesome if all browsers supported them, but not yet - maybe give it 2 years ;)
It would be cool if there were another vector format supported by all browsers other than SWF

So it's not pee enn gee anymore? I've always pronounced it like that and now this writer says it's "ping"? wtf is "ping"??

in addition i have a question on my mind: what has happened to jpg2000 ??
i´ve read some articles about it - sounded really good.
so when photoshop? when browsers?? when when??have i missed something?

I wish more browsers supported PNG's (yes, sometimes referred to as "Pings") they are the best of both gif & jpg worlds, not lossy and smooth gradients. And just incase everyone forgot, the Portable Network Graphic (PNG) has been around for years, why haven't browser producers made use of the technology?

frankly I don't see why pngs are that much better than gifs that warrant a switch anytime soon. alpha channels are useful, but they're not really necessary for any of the designs I come up with.
besides, I'm quite comfortable with gif and its crappy transparency and 256 colors.

Suit yourself, but later on down the line these things may start to matter to you, and then you'll be thinking in the same terms that we (those of us who would like to use PNG's to their fullest) are.

They would be useful for a drop shadow that needs to move over a pattern. For example.

I would also like to see support for transparent swf's. Does any browseer except IE support this? Can you trust it?

take a look at the pop-up menu's on mediatemple.net. I think they only use .png's on the mac though....

You can save png files in 24 bits. Or like stuff, I played with a while back and it was better but it didn't work in explorer. Do quick google search to learn why it is not that supported, I think it uses parts of a code it shouldn't legaly use or some junk.

Yeh and I'm happy using windows 3.1.
-scalable vectors (resize your PNG to any size using HTML IMG tags and no need to re-do the image. I'm talking vector PNGs here, not simple photoshop saved as PNGs)
-smoooooth gradients using the full color palette of thousands of colors
-I can design my graphic in fireworks, and no need to worry about optimizing all the images... just crop and done.

luke - about jpg2000 and photoshop

scalable vectors, smooth gradients, alpha channels, etc. still aren't worth the stress of coming up with a version for older browsers. and there are plenty of hacks in my arsenal to overcome some limitations.
I should have said I'm happy with using crappy gifs, plus jpegs, css, and flash.

huh? i dont get the issue here.
png's would be very handy indeed.
what did png ever do to you?
