is it legal to digitally recreate a landmark/well known billboard, such as the famous welcome to fabulous las vegas nevada sign?
the illustration will be used for an e-card for a client...
anyone know for sure?

wouldnt stress to much about it for an ecard... if you are profiting from it... its another story... its open season with promos.
make it funny and somewhat original and it should fly.

well, it's for a very prominent, large company, so the legality is a big issue.
i'd like to be able to use it, but it may be the case that i have to do something in a similar veign only fictional...

i was working with the Travel Channel for "vegas Week" and we tried using the "Welcome to Vegas" sign for an email... it got killed because someone actually owns the rights to the sign and you have to pay a royalty to use it.

were you using actual footage or a photo of the sign?
i was told that an illustration or digital rendering of the sign was fine...
