...it's kinda making a noise like a spark has just shot out the back, and the screen sorta zooms-in and goes black, then it all comes back into focus. Now I know this isn't normal behavior, and it's getting worse and I'm starting to flinch every time it happens.
Anyone had this happen? Can I fix it?

What a coincidence. One of the blue and white 17" apple screens started doing that yesterday on a coleagues machine. Sounded like it was gonna burst into flames!
No solution for you. We just swapped it for an unused one. But funny how they started doing it at the same time eh? Have you searched Apple's support site?

Yeah this is blue and white....
Apple Support?! You kidding!? A support site is the last place I'd go for help.

Well. Just get yourself some plastic lab goggles and an asbestos suit to shield you from the shards of glass! :-)
I only suggested the support site to see if it was a known problem. They might repair it for free! Otherwise, you gonna have to buy a new monitor. A good excuse to get an apple cinema display.

this happened to me a few years ago.
Kiss your monitor goodbye.
(It may not be done yet... might just have a month or two left ( thats if after clicking for a bit it regains hold of the image). but soon nadda, kaput. sosorry.

oh joy.
seems it's known issue on the support site. guess I'll have to haul it to a dealer, seeing as apple would like £35 to take my phone call....

same thing happened to me. Call Apple. They will take the serial number and tell you if they will fix it (for free).
When mine went they couriered a box to me, picked it up, fixed it and couriered it back without any cost to me.
Thatw as in Canada BTW, although it shouldn’t matter where you are.

well - I'll try ringing Apple direct, but I'm in the UK.
I rang a couple of Authorised Apple dealers and they said the same thing, that apple have ceased to supply them with the spare parts for monitors, but will (for a rip off price of £299) take the broken off me and send a new one.
Think I'll get a nice ViewSonic for £150, with a 3 year on site warranty, and apple can go bust.

Dealers wont touch it unfortuntely. We had to deal directly with Apple, but it was pretty painless. Try the UK support number
0870 876 0753 (UK)
01 407 3000 (Ireland)150 is better than 299, but 0 is even better. all the best

Same thing here as well - this is a known issue with these monitors and if yours is popping with increasing frequency it will most likely eventually blow out. Apple Canada fixed mine for free as well - try calling them and mentioning AppleCare document #88195:

...not sure if this applies in the UK though.
