does anyone have monitor related eye problems? if so..what are the symptoms?
cause every once in awhile i see this flashing patch in one of my eyes, it has all these white and black lines and sometimes color. at first i thought it was because of all the acid i did when i was a kid but i read on webmd.com it may be caused by retinal detatchment.
just wanted to see if anyone else experienced anything like this from looking at a crt for 8 hrs a day
this sucks..its so bad today i can barely read whats on my screen

I believe retnal detachment is a very painful thing.
Try drinking plenty of water and go to bed.
Stop reading gray 9px text aswell

9 pixel text on 1600x1200 resolution is fun.

my face is 6 inches away from my 24" monitor at all times. my glasses precription a lot heavier now. (although i've had glasses since age 5)
get a screen filter. it helps. i dont get massive headaches quite as much. before i got my newest one, i couldnt make it to 4 o clock without vomiting from headaches.

Yeah, just don't stay at the computer for 2 hours (or more) without taking a break. It's bad for your eyes. My eyes get worse all the time but lately they've been staying at the same prescription, mainly because I don't spend as much time watching tv or using the comp.

I've posted this topic before ("Ive got an eye problem"). Do a search and check it out. There's some really good info about these symptoms.

I have severe dry eye syndrome. I know that it is because of staring at a monitor for 9 hours a day. I do a combination of things. Take at least 2 0r 3 10 minute breaks. Go outside or to a window and focus on things far away. Finally, I use an over-the-counter eye drop called "Celuvisc". It's thick and uses no preservatives. Hope that helps.

thanks for the responses all.
i just got back from the optometrist who informed me that it is not retinal detachment as i had thought.
instead it is something called ocular migrains. migrains are caused by a vascular constriction in your head and when that constriction occurs near your ocipital lobe (portion of the brain responsible for sight) then instead of getting a headache you see wacked out colors and flashes for several minutes and then you might get the migraine pain.
hope i typed this all right...ive got drops in my eyes to cause my pupils to dialate and i cant focus on anything close.

About 6 mos. ago, I noticed that everytime I put in my contacts, about 2 hours later, they were fused to my eyeballs. What started out as what I thought was "dry eyes" ended up being what is called "Blepharitis." It is a bacterial infection of the eyelid margin that inflames and slightly swells the edge of your eyelids at the base of the eyelash. Look it up on the web for further info.
Bottomline. It sucks. I read in more than one article that this is often a chronic condition and symptoms during a current bout often last 6 to 8 mos.
This has made my "computer viewing design career" hell. can't wear contacts. Even then, eyes are dry, always. and irritated and bloodshot all day long. I have been to 3 diff doctors. I hope that the winter, dry weather conditions are part of the dilemma. i.e. dry skin, heat in apt. etc.
That is my case. The most persistant and annoying medical condition that I have ever had in my entire life.
I hope you never get it.
get well. Celuvisc does help a bit.bB

i also get this thing where i wake up and my eye is KILLING me. it feels like there's something in it...i flush it out and look inside but there is never anything...and everytime it happens..the nostril that is on the same side as the eye that feels like it has a needle in it is runny.

My left eyelid was twitching from spending too much time in chat rooms trying to follow the discussion. Pick a slow room...my advice. Also stop using a monitor : )
