Can it happen? I need to convince my boss that buying new G4s is the way to go rather than updating the G3 and 350 G4...what do you say?

i'd say your right.. backwards investment = false economy.

if you love having problems then stick with the G3. go with a G4, if your boss doesn't want to budge, then suggest the 17"iMac. pretty powerful for only $2k, plus a rad monitor.

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but going to OS X on a blue G3 nearly sent me to Windows after nothing but Macs for 10 years. It's slow when it works, and that was only briefly. I had to do a clean install, then after while every app quit as soon as it started. I gave up. I had to. I'm on 9.2.2 and not sure what to do next.

would not advise this - cluncky, cluncky... unless you have heaaaappss of RAM.. even then not much good.
Especially if you plan on running classic occasionaly - don't do it!
I have an old generation G4 477 Mhz with 996 Mb Ram - still too slow...
Final word: need a quicksilver mac for OSX

Another possibility is to use a Sonnet upgrade card. it will help ease the sticker-shock of upgrading.

dont forget about video memory...OSX recommends to have at least 16 megs...any less, will make it slow as all hell....

Don't even THINK about it.
OS X is slow on this dual 867 G4
I can't imagine the pain of X on a G3.
oh, and if you're in any sort of design production - I wouldn't even recommend moving to OS X at all.
*Maybe* when OS 10.3 and Quark 5.0.1 are out.

I dont understand, I have a G4 450 896 Mb ram OSX 10.2 and runs just fine. The only programs that still give problems are the microsoft ones. some times I have 3 programs running in the classic, and 5 running on the OS X. Of course my iMac at home with 1 Gb ram 800 processor its more fast, but I can still work just fine in this old G4.

thanks for the responses. About the Sonnet upgrade...I thought that you couldn't upgrade to OSX with a card.
If I upgraded the G4 350mhz with a faster Sonnet card could I use OSX and are there consequences if I can?

In regards to the Sonnet card, you can not upgrade with the older versions, but can with the new releases of the card.
And don't worry about OSX running slowly. That is all BS as far as I'm concerned. I have had no problems running it at all with my G4 450.
Plus, OS 9 is dead, man. It is tme to make the jump. You'll be glad you did...
