It's a B2B mini site for a big entertainment corporation that owns a shit load of TV channels and stations. I've been asked to scope this one. It's an html site and they want me to design and code the site.
There are 6 pages to design and code, also there are 14 pages using one template .
I gave an estimate of about $2500 to complete everything. Do you think I'm charging too much here?? A friend of mine from an ad agency told me to charge $5000.
*All currencies are in Canadian Dollars.
thanks

Ok, you really have to look out for price fixing discussions here. There are actual laws about artificially inflating the price of a product or service simply because you can get away with it.

I'd suggest figuring out how much it will truly cost you to do the site, then base your estimate on that regardless of who the client might be.

i would say 2500CDN is a bit low.

proving price fixing on a project like this is difficult.

hey solargarlic, do you think I over charged the client?? I calculated the hours that I thought would take me to do. I even explained what the cost includes, like revisions on designs, QA.
anyone else?

well, this is the first time I will be working with them, so I don't mind taking a cut from my regular rate. I want to blow them away with the site, then they will come back for more.
But now I'm just worried they might go to someone else who is cheaper.

No, I don't think you overcharged if you thought out exactly what it would cost you to do it and that's what you did.
Now considering raising the price after that stage simply because you can is a bit shady and isn't a good business practice.
After this project, if you think what you do costs more than whatever $$ per hour you're charging, then change it to reflect that.

You should give your self around 10 to 15 hours of bumber time. Add everything up at around $35-$45 per hour. And base it off of that. Do not explain the bumber time. That is for you to make sure you don't over work your self.
That is what I do and it usually works fine.
I am in california. It is a bit different when an agency charges as to freelance. They consider the overhead when dealing agencies. You, according to them, don't have overhead... So just get what you think your time is worth plus a few extra hours. Nothing is free.
Look at it in this aspect. This company is going to make a lot more then they are going to pay you for it. So why should they get something great for hardly anything? It takes money to make money. Just be fair and you might get them back later!!
FRESH!

Well ,that's the other thing. Do you really want to have to explain how your initial estimate was off your actual charge by a grand or so?
Then they will probably bug out. If there's an ioption for them to keep you around after the initial project, then I say stick with a lower price. As far as I'm concerned, a steady modest income form Company X is better than a one-time big check from Company Y.

I've never been able to estimate how long a project will take. Devising an interface and all the other minute details of site seems like an intuitive, unquantifiable process of discovery and collaboration with the client.

thanks for your advice solar, fresh and everyone else.
I am not looking to add to my original scope, I was just worried about my original scope being too high.
I guess I will have to wait for there reply.
thanks again for all your help.
