Wow... things change quickly in the Search Engine industry. A year and a half ago Alta Vista was using Inktomi for their Directory, and then of course their own spidering system for their search index. Looks like InfoSpider is handling the index now. And LookSmart is hanlding the Directory.

I got my site ranked #3 out of all Sound/Sample sites on Google/Yahoo. Check it out. All I did was post it here and partnered with Istockphoto.com, doing some admin work for them.
http://directory.google.com/Top/… Since this is in here many people take the same directory and use them so I get extra hits and subsequently ranked higher by google.com ;)

'Familiar' is right. Whoever was coming out with the BS about having a certain number of visitors to get listed was doing just that.. bullshitting.
The key to great Google rankings is incoming links and lots of textual content for Google to pick up on.

Tricky for Flash sites, b/c Google likes relevant keyword texts appearing:
a) within the HTML body.
b) in TITLE tags.
c) in your URL (strange as it is).And as mentioned before: link popularity. To find out more, do a Google search on "link popularity" ;)
Forget the keyword Meta Tags, Google doesn't use them.
Your buddy could have an HTML alternative page that explains the content of the Flash page with a link to launch it. That's one way to get relevant text on there. But make sure it's real content. Spamming keywords will only get your site booted.

thanks tre
that is very helpful info!

The quickest and easiet way to get listed in Google is by getting other "related" sites to link to your site.
Googlebot (their spider) crawls the web via links. So if noone is linking to you it will be very hard for it to find your site. You can however use Google's submit tool to "suggest" that Googlebot come and visit you - but it's not a for sure thing.
If you have more questions check out this site.. It's the best on search engine info and tips.

it also has to do with content too buddy. no spam and flash sites can be a hinder to your search results. most of the time your server host helps you out with getting noticed. i know namezero helps me out. but its not always meta tags. just adding a bunch of keywords into meta wont bump you ontop of the google list.

Always put your site into DMOZ. Most of the other engines port their data. Not sure if ya'll know that or not. Plus +++ Its an easy way to sneak onto the main sites without paying them money. Just give it some time and you will get listed.

invisible links to your site in the sniffer page or launch page of all the other sites you've done; invisible text in the sniffer page or launch page of your site
- blastofv0
I heard Google was catching on to invisible text and blacklisting sites that overdo it...
- paulrand0
even a basic, brief description of the site or company?

Tre, said it well, in that Google could give a damn about META crappolla! The go more with incoming links and exactly what they think you are about and even name of URL. If you take a look at what I did with this site: http://www.loopkit.com. I am know ranked #3 overall at http://directory.google.com/Top/… it's crazy, but that site is completely in Flash and they must like it? I'll stick with it, I get about 2500 hits a week for a single product site. I figure I am losing about 300 bucks per day on average.

PS, Google will gladly take your money for Premiere rakning services as well, if you feel like paying it go for it, I wouldn't. You can also do those banner type ads on the right hand side for relatively cheap.
