So, I've these psd's I want to get rid of, the problem is that my computer won't let me.
I get this "The file is in use" message, anyone had the same problem?

is photoshop open? otherwise, just reboot.

No, that ain't it. A couple of those files are 3-4 months old. Sometimes I can't even save the psd I'm currently have open in photoshop, I get the same "The file is in use" error message... No kidding it's in use I'M WORKING ON IT!

I am assuming you are on a windows machine and that these are huge files...
I get these occasionally (I work with files anywhere from 50mbs to 400mbs). One thing to notice is that windows has to recognize the file first, before you can delete it. On my machine, with W2000, it tries to create a preview in explorer. Until it does, you can't do anything to the file (rename it or delete it, etc.). It can take anywhere from 5 secs to 30 minutes and usually will either show a thumbnail of it or a black rectangle once it does read it. Then you can delete it. I am sure there is a way around this, but that's what I know.
Method #2 is to go into DOS and manually delete it. Can't help you there, though, I don't know DOS. I had a computer guru friend guide me through that.
This happens with any files that are huge. Hope that helps. If you learn a better way, post it up, I'd like to know.

sounds like there could be something wrong with your photoshop scratchdisc settings, try making it another drive

The scratchdisc settings could explain the "can't save" problem, so I'll try and set up another driver. But it wouldn't put an end to the "can't delete" situation. I'll uninstall PS and see if I can remove the files then.
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

defrag your HD

Well, uninstalling PS did the trick. I finally got rid of those damn psd's. So now I'll try what sexypixel suggested and get myself another drive.

It's XP / 2000 - sometimes when you click on a file, Windows decides it's using the file (to preview / display info about the file, or whatever) Then wont let you move, rename, delete or save over it. It's a MASSIVE pain, but the only solution i've found is to reboot.
Thumnails view seems to be the worst for making it happen, so switch the window into a regular icon view, and if you're using XP, minimise the details panel on the left. After that, reebot, go to that window and delete the files.
Good luck!

I've had this problem before, and for some reason, opening up my ftp client and deleting it through there always seemed to do the trick.
Not that I'd have any idea why.

That makes sense - good solution (well, kinda). It doesn't use any gui really, so maybe it's accessing the info another way (DOS based?)

Again, thanks for all the help!
