Here is the situation,
I am planning on starting a little online service.. I am stuck in a dilemma thinking wether this service should charge for monthly membership or it can be free.
If I go with the free option I wonder what sort of plan I can think of regarding advertisement..
what do services that rely only on advertisement see? What is the standard rates that big corporations usually pay for banners and links to their sites?I assume that there is a correlation between the number of website hits and the amount that the web site charges for advertising. Is there a table or a resource that i can check out to see what the deal is.
Thank you in advance

you better first get the viewers mate and then worry about charging?

but there is a correlation, your right. Not sure what you are up to though in terms of service?

Jason has a point... get an audience first, free beta period or something. you need to build something up before advertisers or customers will be willing to pay.
that said, advertising was in the gutter a year ago. ad spending is picking up, but mainly for the big name sites (aol, yahoo, etc.). If you want advertisers, you will need to show them your audience's demographics and see if they're interested.
then again, I barely have experience in the internet ad business and most of what I know is from articles.

online ad really sucks
there are alot of matrix of measuring the value proposition around it.most ad vertisers want pay per click ...
not much money..but i agree with above comment..
