Trying to convince the IT dept that I need more memory to run graphic apps. "256 is plenty" they say.
What do you run?

1 gig at work/512 mb at home ...both work perfectly fine.
- unknown0
768 MB at home and 1024MB at work.
256 isn't even close to enough, friggin IT dudes!
:P

256's for running Microsoft Word.

PC...
I work in web but I am frequently converting huge print photos to web format.

256 is bare minimum!
double that and make sure you have atleast a 2gb processor and you're laughing

512....but it gets nasty when working with PS, Illy, Flash, DW, BBedit et al open at the same time...and most of the time you do!
so...at LEAST 512MB...(especially when running OS-X)

told them
less ram= more coffee break
mo ram=more productivity
- vena0
well here's what you do. clock a normal, every day operation you do at work.
then tell your boss more memory can cut that time in half.
suits understand numbers, man :)

I've had 512 at home for more than a year now, 256 here at work is killing me.
At least it's a new P4.
- Duck0
great advice... I'll try that.
coffee breaks vs. productivity.
nice.
I'm thinking an extra 512 stick would be good.
- paulrand0
1.25 gig

who can resist, when it's so cheap? Believe it or not, I once paid $1500 for 1 meg of ram-- that's not a typo.
- 4cY0
geezz.....paulrand...I would have gone for coffee breaks at the time if I was you..
:P
- jpea0
man, if you're the paul rand from parsons in like 1930 something, you're a god;-)
i didn't even know they HAD ram back then!

If it's OSX, leave the Terminal open (using 'top') and try to decipher the memory stats using ..should tell you how much of your RAM is actually being used...
but in the end RAM is relatively cheap compared to lost productivity waiting for stuff to happen... false economy to be skimpy with it...
