if you don't have time to do it with actionscript, you could imitate it pretty easily.

I would rather go the actionscript route as I'm positive the animation will turn out smoother...however, I'm totally agains't animating it...how would you suggest going about it?

you're against animating it? hm, I think I know what you mean..
this is my suggestion..make the curve, just a static image of a line with that curve. Then just scroll it. Put it behind a mask so you can't see the scrolling part. You'll have to position it carefully so that it looks smooth when it loops... make sense?

See, the thing about that animation are the subtleties...i.e. the end of the line (far left) moves faster vertically near the middle than at its ends so I think some real-world physics are in need because I don't think animating by hand will get it right.
