I am thinking about getting a notebook to replace my desktop PC. (1ghz, 512MB RAM, 20gig)
On my list:
Toshiba Satellite 2430-S255
Dell Inspiron 8200Anyone would like to share their experiences on buying a Dell online?

Damn. DO NOT get a toshiba. Get a Dell Inspiron 8200. I have had mine for a year now and have not had any problems with it. This thing is a beast, it does better than my desktop ever did! Their is also great support if you need it from Dell.

Dell is great. Though Dell should at least have one shop in HK!
I would like to look at the real thing first, to give it a durability test, before I click the PAY button.
HIVE7, Does your 8200 overheat?
- HIVE70
no, the thermal managment on the I-8200 is amazing, running at a full 1.8 GHz the CPU and Motherboard all run below 90o. The two fans are not loud. They run smooth and soft.
And for durability, its really strong. It has a plastic skin but it is reinforced. You could probably drive your car over this thing and it would still work fine.

i've got a new dell 8200 and an older vaio fx series. imho, the fan on the dell is relatively loud when i run processor intensive programs (games, etc...), but the display is awesome - opt for the UXGA, it's worth it. the dell is pretty light considering what's inside, but that's primarily because its made from what i consider to be cheap plastic.
as for running it over with a car, i don't think that would be very wise :). in fact, sometimes i get marks on the screen from the keyboard when the only place it's been is in my laptop bag.
but other then the aforementioned gripes, i'm really happy with it. it runs like a beast.

Weighing in at around 7lbs, this is technically a "laptop", by defination a "notebook" is less than 5 lbs.. Bet you always wanted to know that!

High performance. Good quality.

In a whole, I think I will get the I-8200. Just the online-order-only part I am not particular comfortable with.
Thanks guys/ladies.Just found out, it will take 1-2 weeks to deliver to my place. But I am leaving the country in less than 14 days, it's a bit tight. :o
Second thought, I will get the Toshiba one.

Noooo! do yourself a favor and get one of the Sony GR series laptops with a 16" screen :-)
The GRV550 is the model I own, unbelievable screens, 512MB DRR, 2.4 GHz P4... it's the bombz... Order it from best buy or go to best buy and get it

Sony is niiiiice...
The design is nice, the specs are nice, but all they have is a Radeon 7500 graphics chipset in their lineup.
I am more wanting a notebook that is capable handling occasional virtual slaughtering, like Quake 3, as well.

radeon benchmarks are very good for the q3 engine... i would never buy a POS toshiba laptop, they get returned all the time and their keyboards are cheap as hell

do they? noooo...
Sony do have international warranty for their laptop right?
- rise0

theres probally a sony store somewhere in hong kong

I went into Sony the other day and they said they don't offer any international warranty.
On their website, they said they do however.
I am left confused.
What an abortion of service they provide.
