whether or not its defined as a racist term (i have no idea), i'm pretty sure its not a word that would be used much in england, in my experience(i could be wrong).
its not a term i'd use, or feel comfortable using, especially if japanese friends were around.

Just thought I'd give '2cents' worth.
I'm Scottish and and the term Scot is not in the least offensive to me or my fellow Scots. We regularly use the term to describe ourselves. (I'm also a Brit, again not offensive.)
What I don't understand is when people get upset when other people abreviate the descriptive term for a person belonging to a certain country.
Why is Jap, Paki etc. offensive? I just don't get it.
What does really piss me off though is when people, particularly from the South of England and the deep South of the US, refer to Scots as 'Scotch'.
Scotch is whiskey and when this term is used to describe me and my fellow Scots it just shows how ignorant people can be.
There ye go.
Cheers

how many wars has scotland had with usa?

What are you talking about? The UK and the USA are the best of friends, politically.
If you think I'm trying to have a go and start something you're very much mistaken. I'm simply speaking from experience.

nigeria is a country, and there is a slight variation on the proper name of the country that is offensive.
it's all in the details and the social context.

Hi, I don't visit or post on newstoday on a regular basis, (this is actually my first - and most likely last - post) so I'm not aware of much that goes on here, nor am I aware of what kind of audience I'm communicating to right now. But I guess that doesn't matter anyways.
Just wanted to comment on the whole 'jap posters' thing.
I have to admit that when I read it, it did disturb me. Go ahead and call me insensitive, but if you're not Japanese then maybe you wouldn't know how that term could offend a person who is. btw, i am.
Yes it does have in some part to do with the war camps, yes I do have every right to bring that up in explaining why the term 'jap' may offend me.
No I wasn't alive when it happened, but as pathetic as it may seem, I do have to deal with people that are stupid enough to act towards me as if I was alive during WWII and calling me racist names because of their stupidity.
Geographical term my ass. If it is used in the present and has been used in the past in a demeaning sense, it is a word to be used with precaution and sensitivity. I have no idea whether Alvin meant any harm, giving him the benefit of the doubt I'm sure he didn't. That doesn't mean it's okay to use the term.
Neither does the fact that he is reportedly an asian from Singapore. Most of the racism, and more passionate racism I have received in my life has come from other asians. My Japanese ancestors have done some horrible acts in the past to our neighbours, so there is a lot of pain there.. again, no excuse for racism.
All I'm saying is we all have a duty, especially when posting in a public forum or any situation when dealing with others to think and act responsible. Take into consideration other peoples feelings. I'm sure it isn't hard to write out 'japanese' as suppose to 'jap', and I'm sure less ignorant people would know that the term 'jap' does carry negative connotations along with it.
btw, if you are going to post anything in a public forum, you'd better be ready for a public response. No private emails here.
To the person who was wondering why the term 'jap' or 'paki' would be perceived as offensive.
Why does it piss you off when people call you 'scotch'? Does it have anything to do with the fact that they feel it's a correct term to address you by and it offends you to know they'd be stupid enough to call you by such an insulting name? Kinda makes you think doesn't it? or does it? I surely hope so.
Maybe the best way for you to 'get it' would be to call the next 'jap or 'paki' you see a 'jap' or 'paki' ..their response may help you see things more clearly.
It may seem as though this whole little post may have been blown out of proportion, keep in mind that I'm also responding to other peoples reactions. Not only that, but I guess that's what happens when someone doesn't 'think' before they act.
Everyone has a right to voice their opinion right?
It may have not been racism,
but it surely was insensitive.

A couple of weeks ago, I was shooting some architectural pics near the EMP in Seattle and some dude rode his bike by me and said "another jap with a camera stuck to his chin".
I'm not japanese. I don't even look japanese. But to this guy it didn't matter.
You may think nothing of the word, but unless you've been called one, you wouldn't know how it feels.

first and last time, a lot of good words too. i totally agree.
it really isn't hard to use a term that you KNOW won't offend anyone.
i'm english and i don't think i've ever used the term scot, just doesn't seem right.
actually, i don't like the word brit. i think people are happy to be english, welsh and scotish rather than brits.
- lee_b0
doesn't seem very nice 'hey_bub
' but i know what you're saying (kind of).i'm pale pink/orange, but you can call me white, i don't mind
- 4cY0
I am red when sunburnt, (light)brown after a good summer, blue when I am dead, yellow when I am sick, white when I am shocked etc. etc.
call me colored.

i disagree about the brit/english thing. in my experience people from most parts of the country call themselves british, whereas in the south east they tend to be 'english'. but maybe i'm wrong.
and that scot/scotch post. so you are unable to understand why 'pakistani' is fine, but 'paki' will offend. yet you can understand perfectly well that 'scot' is fine, and 'scotch' offends??
anyway, excellent thread. i especially liked that bit where that one guy came in and cleared everything up.

One person (msn address, first post) claiming to be of Japanese descent chiming in doesn't validate your idiocy.
Without expending much effort, you could probably find some whiny Americans who would burst into tears at the first utterance of the word "Yank" to refer to some article of American culture. Should the term be dropped from common usage?
It's your right to live in the past, fretting over an archaic usage of a geographical abbreviation that hasn't borne negative connotations since the filming of "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949, John Wayne).
Good luck with that.

transfatty,
alvin at phunk is not japanese. he's chinese and being ignorant.
a japanese person would never use the word "jap" a nor should you. why fight it, just don't do it.

I was refering to the fact that us and japan have been to a war with each other. and not just A war but THE war. That's why the term is racist (or disparaging as dictionary.com insists). That's why "gook" is also a racist (or, once again, disparaging term) term. I don't know the roots of the term "scot", but even if has once been used as disparaging word for those barbarians living up north by the king and his men in luvly londinum, it was such a long time ago that the bad "taste" seems to have washed away.
for me, even though i'm white and count my self as liberal minede and in no way racist, both terms seem ok. it may be that my country (estonia) has never been to war with these countires (japan and scotland), or it just might be that i don't see the point of seeing shorter versions of names of countries as being racist.
that's about it...
