CD-ROM problems

I realize this is not in any way a tech forum, but I'll ask anyway.
The last year or so, I've been having problems with my cd-rom drive(s).
The problem is with both cd's and burned cd-roms. The cd's appear to be reading ok for a while, but then they start spinning wild, like some car burning rubber on a parking lot.
And my computer hangs.
So I grew tired of this problem, and bought a new cd-rom player, and guess what? Same problem. Damn. Anyone else experiencing crazy spinning cd-rom drives?
I have the same problem on three diferent drives, and I've tested on other computers without any problems at all...
Any tips for fixing this shit?

I'm no hardware genious either, but you might want to look into getting the latest driver, or firmware update from the manufacturer.
It doesn't sound like the drive has a problem, just the way the computer "commuicates" with the drive.
Might work, might not, hopefully it'll help ya out.

Problem is this happens on three different cd-rom drives from three different manufacturers.
It happened on Windows 98, and it happens on XP... At first I thought it was errors on my cds, but it can't be, since it now happens on almost all cds I have.

I did it with a stereo, but I don't know if it works on a CD-Rom, but I cleaned the lens with some spirit and a Q-type (the thing to clear the ears)
My drive just didn't read some cds...
hope it helps good luck
(what is the brand of the drive ?)
