Hondas and Toyotas last forever.
I don't think you will bedisappointed with either. As for mazda, they don't have near the track record of the other two.
My freind just has had his 2002 civic for a while now and has had no complaints.
I bought a 2001 Toyota tacoma last year and also have had no complaints.
Good luck.

go for the honda.

They're all I can afford. I feel they are at the top of the list ( Toyota, Honda) when it comes to reliability, crashworthyness, handling, ergonomics and reseller value at that price range.

How's that other car you had doing? Has it gone thru surgery yet?

all equality eside from the honda and toyota.. the honda is nice because u can customize it easily, but costs some $. The toyota already has a nice amt. of styling to the redesigned car new this year. As for road testing.. and seeing faults.. it looks like the corolla has the edge, but its in its first year and there are bound to be some problems down the line.

:( It was a write off.... It was a good lil car too. But I hope to get into something better.

I researched this to death here in Atlantic Canada about 5 months ago. I purchased a 2002 Honda Civic and haven't had a single complaint since.
Here's why I didn't buy the other two:
Toyota Corolla:
It's a solid car but since the redesign they have been selling like hotcakes so you have little power to get a better deal from the dealer. When I was looking the Corolla would have cost me about $19,900 compaired to the $17,500 I paid for a Civic. Also, Toyota does wierd things with is dates now... example, I test drove a 2003 Corolla in August 2002 that had a manufacturing date of December 2001 (that's the one on the door that will determine your resale value). Odd.Mazda Protege:
Beside the fact that I didn't liek the look of this car, it too was more expensive and it was in a higher insurance bracket than the Corolla or Civic.I think the Civic and Corolla are both great cars. I just got more for my $$ with the Civic. Plus, I was happy purchasing a car manufactured here in Canada.
Email me if you have any questions.

how about jetta?

jetta's are nice.
i have a 99. got a good deal for it too.
the insurance is a bit extra and it will probably be more expensive to fix than a honda when the time comes, but still...a wicked car no less

Dude get a Volks!!!
Jetta, Golf, GTI????
they are great, i have a 1998 VW Golf and i have 100k miles on it and it runs and handles awesome....

I agree the jetta is a really nice car, but the insurance and cost is just too much to afford /month on a lease.

Ok.. Protege is now out.
Now its only between:
The new Redesigned Corolla or the very popular Civic

I've been reading up heavily on the '02 Civic Hybrid, since I'm seriously considering getting one of those, and have yet to find anything negative... really, anywhere. The same applies to the generic Civic, though you won't be getting near the gas mileage.
Go hybrid! Go hybrid!
(PS... that "return of the muscle car" was horrifying looking. I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those...)

I know this might be an unpopular response, but I say the Corolla. Toyota's reliability record, in my opinion, is second to none--and Consumer Reports seems to consistently agree. I have a number of friends who have seen 150k-250k miles with their Toyotas. The Jetta is a good way to spend a lot of money at purchase and years from now, although they look great. If you're looking to purchase a car and drive it for 10+ years, the Corolla will work out fine.

if you want a reliable car, get the honda. change the oil and filters and it'll never be in the garage......
jetta's simply do not holk up in the long run. 4 of my friends have jettas and laughed at me when i bought a civic. theyve all drop thousands in repairs. the most ive dropped is like $20 for an air filter once.

thanks kerus, i'm really thinking about it, because of the price of ownership
