'I am music' is nice. feelin it.

Well i must say "its definitly experimental" ..its has its highs and lows, but Common has been in the game now for years...so more or less he is evolving as an artist and trying new things.
There are some tracks that are str8 garbage, but you need to listen to it a few times to get a feel for it. "I am music" is definitly the highlight track.
Peace...
Pick up the new NAS - or listen to his new track GET BY.....cot damnn..no comment...Even MADE YOU LOOK.....get that too

frankie baby, damn you hyped this album up after TOTALLY talking shit on kweli and the roots...sorry homie, i love common but, you're wrong, not his best album, and i still don't know why you keep doggin' on the roots and kweli...they are all in the same family anyway...
- deGa0
Well said knots..!

Haven't heard it yet, but can it really beat his earlier albums?
I doubt it...but i'm looking forward to it anyway
peace

I seen that video from new_roots and I can say that that is not the sound of the roots I know. I'll have to see what they have to offer me on the cd.
I bet after a listen, I would be able to over look the last foul.
school me on the tracks to look out for.

honestly, i was a little disappointed in all of them_to a certain extent_i think that i look forward to hearing them for soo long that i set myself up for disappointment...don't get me wrong there's great work on each of them, i just always expect to be blown away.
- Ctrl_Z0
I've always liked his shit.
I have not listened to it enough but off the top it doesnt beat his prev 2 releases.
seems like he comes through on lyrics in colabs, and is more self-exploratory on his own shit.
still his worst shit is still dope.

I just hope common doesnt go into some shit like q tip did, becoming too much of an 'artist' and all.
- Ctrl_Z0
he is what he is.
least it's not some off the wall shit like outcast fashions.
those kids are kar-ay-zay.

knots:
the roots and kweli albums are shitty hip hop records.
the common album doesn't even pretend to be a rap record. it's a 'music' album.
rhyming over roy ayers inspired, stereolab cyphened, dr buzzard's original savannah band lifted, jimi hendrix miming instrumentals does not a rap album make.
fuck, limp bizkit and red hot chili peppers would be rap music.
electric circus is NOT common's best rap album.
it's his best album.
his lyrical zenith on an album was one day (specifically hungry), production wise was resurrection.
like water for coffeehouse chicks and white dudes was soft as shit outside of like 3 tracks.
electric circus is fresh, even though it's derivative if you know the obvious influences.
i repeat.
the roots album is trash. the kweli album is half trash.
same fam or not.
i mean, i look better than my uncle, and we're still family.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the roots album is trash I would just say they got a fuckin check. there are dudes out there like black thought that use the nature head/natural/underground look to his advantage because that is basically his appeal...and I think he and the other greenback worshipping members the midget music included compromise some of the music to get paid. Now i am from philly and I go to the parties quest love throws and although i know they gotta eat he is the realest one when it comes down to fucking love for music. just like fuckin mos def as soon as he got a fuckin check the revolution wasn't televised any more. But I do agree with you on kweli's album it's half doo-doo and commons album is nice
and puffy is a rapper...Em, B.Thought(still gotta give him his props), Ghost, Nas, Lif etc MC's
- neeko0
agreed. the last wilco album was amazing.
- pdod0
It's wrong to say Kweli's and Roots new albums is shit, have you even listened through it more than one time? I doubt it.
And yes the seed 2.0 is incredible track. Respect!
- neeko0
ya.
- kpl0
i dunno. something about common lamely going "grind-deeng" just didn't do it for me.
album is alright, not close to resurrection tho. I'm trying to get into it, but the sound is too southern and his midwest ass ain't pulling it off.

pdod:
what's "wrong" about saying kweli and the froot's album is shit if that's what it is? substandarded shit trying to be passed off the second coming (in phrenolopiece theatre's stuff).
since we're assuming, and you're from sweden and all, i suppose you started listening to rap in 97 or like groups like the froots because "they play their own instruments" not because they are rap music. in fact, defending mediocre albums like quality and phrenolopiece theatre do nothing but provide substantial indication that you don't listen to rap music for much more than to feel eclectic. you probably fit the 'coffeeshop chicks and white dudes' stereotype common laid out for us on TFA. i'll let you decide your category.
both albums suck shit coming from artists who can and have done better work. these albums are not progression, they are sidestepping (the froots are sidestepping) or stepping backwards (kweli). both of their immediately previous albums were leaps and bounds above both records and that's not saying much cuz Things Fall Apart was a snoozer of an album to.
that's nice that you go to quest parties and all, but whether or not he 'truly has a love for music' or not is of no consequence. his record still sucks in a hip hop context outside of the drums (so at least he did his part). their song composition leaves much to be desired on this record.
it's obvious they just started listening to rock music like 2 years ago and tried to incorporate it into their sound. this album is like trying to go out and chill with your boys but only putting on your socks, draws, and a ball cap and didn't finish getting yourself changed.
and cody chestnutt's album sucks.
- frankiebaby0
yes kpl
outkast did already pull this album off better with aquemini and stankonia.
but musically, it's still common's best record. but that had little to do with him since he doesn't play any instruments outside of the triangle.
that had more to do with poyser, jay dee, quest, prince, stereolab, jeff lee johnson, and whoever else got down on the music end of it.
a shame. all my favourite rappers don't like rappin no more.

Frank, you and I always seem to get into it, you are entitled to your own opinion and that is what makes this forum great, but you don't gotta insult people because their view differs from your own and just because you are black that doesn't make you an authority on black music or that your views hold more validity than others no matter who they are. Your opinions are your own and you don't gotta be such a jerk when giving them. Electric CIrcus is in fact Hip-hop album, there is more to hip-hop than rhyming over hard beats, or break dancing etc. it's a whole culture and it most definently about evolving so what they just listened to rock and tried to incorporate it into there music better them(people that actually live the culture) than limp bizkit (a fuckin gimmick). They have evolved and you don't like tha direction they are going in cool. Don't impose your one sided views of what you think Hip-hop should be and if cats started listening to hip-hop 5 minutes ago and have an intelligent enough response their opinion is also valid. I didn't hear Cody Chestnutts album but I did hear one song that did suck as far as the "neo-soul" movement nothing I heard tops Erykah's last album D'angelo's last album (people slept on that..he even owon a grammy and nobody gave him props) and Jilly from Philly. Have you heard of Kindred yet, another group from philly thats about to change the soul game. Totally unrelated your piece for DFF was excellent most cats try to make these elaborate flash pieces but your piece was short ssweet and to the point and most importantly it made me think.
