The story in question was a police officer killing his wife and kids while they slept in the middle of the night.
There is no such thing as 'in the heat of the moment' when the victims are sleeping. It was premeditated, and had he not had a gun, he likely would have beaten them - a far worse way to die, in my humble opinion.
That aside, it misses the issue in a way I feel most of society misses the issue. The issue isn't about whether or not you should be allowed to have an object, it's about who you make responsible? Do you allow people to be responsible for themselves, or do you have the government rule your life and dictate what is best for you.
I, personally, prefer responsibility for one's own actions.
