    I worked on online newspapers about 5 years ago and the reasoning then was to ensure an entirely idiot-proof environment for the user - most western people visually scan top/down, left/right so it makes sense to structure content accordingly.

    Newspaper companies don't tend to be very imaginative in this area - the delivery of their content and advertising is their prime consideration.

    Unfortunately, this approach has drawn online newspapers away from their analogue allure - the ability to flick between pages, scanning content quickly and being caught arbitrarily by articles of interest. One has to to be content with trawling through broad categories, only being drawn to pieces with specifically interesting headers...

    But then, you do have the likes of http://www.iht.com/ who get it 'right'!

    My apologies for using the term 'analogue allure'. It is a sunday after all.
