Yeah it's shit. Your only option is looking for something like PCMacLANor one of those other programs. There is a lot of information on the web in regards to this.
We use instant messenger in our office to send files back and forth because it defaults to the LAN in order to send files if you're sharing the connection between the computers. You could try that instead of sneaker net.
