as mentioned b4, why not load your images into the big space on the left, you can still do a popup on that if you want to show biger images..
on originality: i don't see why you have to reinvent the wheel every time. If it works use it, then it doesn't matter if it looks 90's etc. (as long as its not the 80s) Speeking of what works, you might want to consider the colour of your text in about. So far I have not been able to read it. (may just be my crappy dark display though)
