The Kondratiev Cycle, an economic theory developed by the Russian economist Nikolai Kondratiev in the 1920s, posited that the global economy developed in cycles of roughly 50 years: around 25 years of growth followed by 25 years of decline. These cycles were sparked by the invention of important technologies like the steam engine, steel smelting, railroads, cars and computers.

But the Kondratiev Cycle had flaws. While it explained economic developments of the 18th and 19th centuries quite well, it seemed to break down in the 20th century, when the cycles related to the automobile and computer failed to match reality.

In this episode, the first in a two-part series, I'm joined by Dr Christof Niederwieser, an astrologer, business consultant and researcher. Christof realised that the Kondratiev Cycle was actually an astrological cycle: the synodic cycle of Uranus and Pluto. His modification of the Kondratiev Cycle, the Astro-Kondratiev, fixes the problems of the Kondratiev Cycle and gives us fascinating insights into the direction history and economies are moving in.
