    Feel good story time.

I live in a private neighborhood. You either live here or are visiting the area, as there is no through traffic. The only business is a nursing home in the very back of the development where it's always quiet. Being so, you occasionally see a few older people out for a walk using walkers. Another has a rascal and has stopped by to discuss my vehicles on occasion when I've been outside.

Yesterday, I was getting a new dryer, so I asked my most supplied neighbor if I could borrow his dolly to make moving the old and new units around a bit easier. Fast forward to completing the wiring in my garage with a friend that afternoon and I walk across the street to return said dolly.

Upon return, an older gentleman has appeared in the street in front of my house resting on his walker seat. I ask him if everything is all right and he responds "Yes, just needed to take a break. A wheel has come off my walker." What!? I say as I sit on the curb and yep, this guy is doing three wheel motion with a bunch of smashed bearing pieces floating on an open axle.

He tells me he has the wheel and pulls it from his walker seat. Aside from an unneeded race from the destroyed bearing still inserted in the wheel, it looks like a skateboard bearing will fit perfectly on each side.

I ask him to head into the garage as I go inside to grab a set of bearings. A flathead screwdriver and a hemmer later, the old race is out and two JuJu bearings seat right in. I take the nut off, pull the out smashed pieces of the old bearing and it glides right on. I tighten the nut to tension, so the wheel doesn't shake and it rolls smooth as butter.

Elated, and visibly moved, he introduces himself as Kendall asking what he owes me, before telling me the local medical supply store was going to charge $150 for the repair. I introduce myself in return stating there is no need for compensation.

He then asked if the red car in the back of my garage is mine. I tell him yes, it's a 1957 Thunderbird. He says it's beautiful and remembers them from being a kid before telling me he was born in 1948.

He thanks me again for everything and I tell him if any of the other three wheels give him a problem to come back. Then he rolls down my driveway to continue on his walk.

    Best day in a while.

    • Helping others is the best of all feelings. It's touching to see how alone and helpless certain elders are...OBBTKN
    • Good on you! I'm surprised they used standard skateboard-size bearings - I'd expect them to use astandard ones, like my kid's fucking pram does.Nairn
    • When they started going, I thought I was being super- clever popping down to the local skate shop, but nup. Found equivs on eBay, so not end of the world.Nairn
    • Nice one. It's shocking how elders are overlooked in the west compared with some eastern cultures.mort_

    • As far as the '57 Thunderbird just laying around in my garage, yes. People often try to buy it. Not the only garage I keep vehicles in, either.imbecile
