The other day I narrowly avoided an argument with my partner defending Israel and it's general, if unfortunate, position in the world. It got a bit tense, and I couldn't see it going anywhere useful, so weasled out of it.

Just now I starting blubbing watching a video of a Palestinian father walking around with the only surviving member of his family cradled in his arms. Luckily, baby had been found in the rubble of the building that had been destroyed. Less luckily, everyone else in the family had died. His wife, his other kids - her family, brothers and whoever else.

I had to stop the vid, look out the window then shake my head to stop being such a pussy (fatherhood's made me even more sentimental than I already was), and then all I was left with was incandescent rage for this inhumanity.

I'm just some schmo twat in a country far away, comfortable and immediately unperturbed by the fallout from such events. I'll forget about this guy and the utter tragedy of his existence a day from now.

The rage I would feel if I were a Muslim ... well, anywhere, I cannot fathom. The rage I would feel as a Palestinian in Gaza or Israel? I dare not imagine.

This shit's going nowhere, except bad.

    • The point, if there were any, is how does individual, mass outrage translate to change? Useful change?Nairn
