The beermaker Wadworth, founded in Wiltshire in 1875, took on one of the world’s largest broadcasters over the right to name a new product “Game of Stones”. The brewer’s trademark for its “thirst-quenching golden ale” was challenged by the makers of Game of Thrones, the fantasy TV show whose eighth and final series begins on Monday.

Wadworth launched the beer last summer, saying that it had chosen the name because its Devizes brewery “is in the heart of the mystical county where Stonehenge and the Avebury stone circles are just a stone’s throw away”.

HBO, the American pay-to-view company that makes Game of Thrones, opposed the trademark, arguing that the similarities in the names meant that drinkers could be confused into believing that the beer was linked with the series.
