    • they also get a pension for the rest of their lives and continued health benefits. I come from a family of teachers, they only work 180 days out of the year toowhatthefunk
    • And so they should. Weird having to work 3 jobs to survive though. Or perhaps thats just me.fadein11
    • Every teacher in my family worked 2-3 jobs, especially summer. Coaching, drama, dance, writing, tutoring and/or side business. My father worked 7 days a week...whatthefunk
    • ...for 35 years but he had a side business he loved. They always said, "teachers who rely solely on a teacher's salary are dumb"whatthefunk
    • And I support them philosophically, but if your state is in the bottom 20% national ranking + a low tax state then good luck getting another raise over 3yrs...whatthefunk
    • Amazing, I never knew that was the case in the US. Teachers also get the "work half the year" over here but perhaps more appreciated after all.fadein11
    • Wow, seriously mind is blown that teaching is not considered a profession to solely live off. Vital. Difficult.fadein11
    • Is any vital public service job given a minimum salary level in the US or is it all dictated at state level. I know I am showing my ignorance here but genuinelyfadein11
    • interested (I could google I know).fadein11
    • Differs greatly state to state and education level. Starting salary ~$37k and it increases like every 10 years with higher bumps based on edu.whatthefunk
    • States like OK, AZ, WV and others are also lower tax states that have cut far more from education so that's the primary concern. Not just salary but overall eduwhatthefunk
    • budgets have been cut so less quality books, programs, supplies, etc. But tbh, this has been happening in edu since the 80s with a downward trajectory of $whatthefunk
    • Less we forget that these states (OK, WV, AZ) are also deep red states that essentially voted against their own interests in many ways...whatthefunk
    • yep, similar situ in UK, nothing more absurd than a working class tory voter. Cheers for the info.fadein11
    • becoming a teacher in ontario is like winning the lottery.Gnash
    • You can add MS to that list of states you mentioned above. Deep red state, lack of proper education funding, and most recently a big push to cut taxes....kirshar12
    • These school administrators are so out of touch. I recall my father complaining b/c they wanted to add 3 additional language courses. As an English teacher he..whatthefunk
    • ...said "So many of these kids are failing English, now you want to add Chinese, German, and Japanese, how do you think that's going to work out?!?"whatthefunk
