I may have accidentally bought an HTC Vive.

I have a new minion to order around at work (which makes me a boss again, jesus fucking christ) and he comes with a background of making arch-viz VR using Unreal. I have dabbled with Unreal but never sat down with it at any great length but I recognise its potential for cool realtime shit.

Anyway. We have discussed expanding into VR at the office and I was always reticent mainly because I didn't have the time and was never fully convinced about it's potential - especially with the types of projects we do. To get one of our models into a workable state can be a hellish job.

But with New Guy we can start almost immediately with no real learning curve apart from my dumb ass and I think with his VR smarts and my visual

we have the potential to make some real fucking cool shit. I have seen what other outfits here do with their VR and to be honest, it's either bland garbage or stupid Lawnmower Man fuckery - my previous minion and prodigy told me they have tested VR at her office and they had giraffes and oranges and shit in their demo. Fucking what?! (she does great 2D stuff, btw).

So. We bought / built a new VR PC and got a Vive to go with it and the lightbulb suddenly went off and I got it - that flash of enthusiasm that has previously withered away to fucking nothing. The chance to begin again in the Offworld VR Colonies! To make my day-glo 2D creations in 3D? And be able to fly around that shit? Yes! And, by a magical coincidence, a store here was doing a promo on Vive setups - like, 15% off - so I thought, fuck it all to Hades and got one. I have been wondering about what where to take my career - do I go into games, or arch photography, or animation - but I think VR has the greatest scope for expansion, money, tits, and fun.

See you on the other side boys!

    • we lack VR talk / threads on QBN... when / if you guys start to produce some stuff it'd make my day if you had a thread or at least shared in here.PonyBoy

    • We use it for some tools at work. Some good potentialmugwart
    • I'm really looking forward to digging into it. I'm excited about UE's realtime GI more than anything - light/shadow is my thing, I already have ideas for scenesface_melter
    • Your final paragraph is sort of what I feel about VR - I certainly need some direction to go in to encourage and maintain interest in my future..detritus
