as an ancap i'm like "the government is a bad guy - it steals from people even murders and enslaves them. why do people think it's a good virtuous institution? in other words, why does it exist?".

the usual reply from a statist is "in a free world without government, some bad person or group of people might steal from, murder, or even enslave you."

and all i can think is, "this actually IS a free world and somehow you just agreed with me but you still don't see it"

    • What political system do you think would be a good solution to the problem?Morning_star

    • sorry, my mistake, I thought that ancap was anti capitalist. I must refresh my knowledge of portmanteau words.Morning_star
    • It's not a free world. For 99% of human history we were a bunch of peasants being exploited by a tiny elite, democracy is the only thing that's ever alleviatedzarkonite
    • that reality since we developed agriculture.zarkonite
    • nature is free - like fish, birds, insects. people live under mandatory, compulsive, coercive "way of life" which couldn't be considered natural by any means..bliznutty
    • fact is we ARE nature and have been controlled over history. my conclusion is we're meant to be free and the world would be more beautiful if were sobliznutty
    • thus, is why i hold a consistent philosophy of voluntary interactions and non-aggression principle in order for world to be more free, natural, and beautifulbliznutty
    • I like the idea of voluntaryism but IMO the people supporting it tend to be very naive about the reality of power in the world.yuekit
    • The truth is if you get rid of government tomorrow its not going to be smiley happy people holding hands...yuekit
    • Just like with nature it would be the strong exploiting and taking advantage of the weak. Fish and birds might look free but if you observe longer you wouldyuekit
    • realize they live a pretty brutal existence.yuekit
    • You can't fight power with wishful thinking...so you could literally carry a gun around all the time or hire bodyguards.yuekit
    • But that's very inefficient and a big waste of your time. Also no guarantee that someone with more guns and bodyguards won't come around.yuekit
    • Alternately you could pool your resources together with other people and hire a collective security force. Maybe agree to certain rules in exchange for beingyuekit
    • part of the community. All of sudden you have the freedom to do what you want instead of spending all your time defending yourself.yuekit
    • But it also looks a lot like the beginning of a government ;) I'm not saying government is great as currently exists, but I do think it came about for a reason.yuekit
