Democratic California assemblyman announces resignation amid sexual harassment allegations
The announcement came as the Times was preparing to publish a story accusing Raul Bocanegra of sexually harassing six women. The outlet reportedly reached out to the assemblyman's office regarding the report on Friday afternoon.
Bocanegra responded saying he would call for the Assembly Rules Committee to investigate the claims.
“I believe rather than adjudicate these allegations in media reports, there should be a formal investigation into these matters,” he wrote, according to the paper. “I am committed to full cooperation."
Bocanegra said his decision to remain in office until the end of the term was to save the state from "another costly special election" and "ensure our community is not left without any representation in the State Assembly."
In October, the Times reported that the assemblyman was disciplined for an incident in 2009 where a Capitol staffer accused him of "inappropriate and unwelcome physical contact," the Times reported.
