here's my political 'the more you know' input.
income taxes - today mostly pushed and justified by the liberal/democratic left was actually created by the extreme conservative religious nuts of the south in order to promote alcohol prohibition so that the government could still collect taxes after their agenda was passed (given the govt made 40% of its money via alcohol tariffs before 1913).
secession - an idea made popular by conservative states in the south trying to secede before civil war so the liberal states couldn't tell them how to live - is now mostly pushed by liberal states (such as California) who are tired of republicans getting a vote in on their way of life.
