About to buy a 2017 iMac and trying to decide between 2 different configurations. Will primary be used for Logic Pro X and probably Adobe CC, photo editing, etc. I don't play games and I don't do video work.

Trying to decide between the following:

    June 2017 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with Retina 5K display
    8GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory
    1TB Fusion Drive
    Radeon Pro 570

    Vs.

    June 2017 3.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with Retina 5K display
    8GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory
    2TB Fusion Drive
    FaceTime HD camera
Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB video memory

I'll add aftermarket memory to both to get up to 32GB for cheaper than you can with Apple.

The 3.4 Ghz is about $420 less than the 3.8 Ghz, which has double the drive space, and a better video card.

Keep in mind that my main computer right now is a 2011 MBP with 1TB SSD, and 16GB memory. Either of these iMac configurations is going to be quite a bit more powerful than my MBP, which still works flawlessly.

Can't really decide. I've mainly been wanting one so that i have a dedicated computer for recording, but I can see shifting some of my other interests to an iMac. No doubt that photo editing on it will be incredible compared to my pre-Retina MBP.

    • always, always always go for the better video card and storage space ... the price difference is worth itmonospaced
    • that little extra is like purchasing a full year's extra usability out of itmonospaced

    • Build a hackintosh instead. I just put a GTX-1060 in mine. All my audio stuff works perfect too. I know people can't be bothered or whatever, but they're easy..section_014
    • ... to put together, and can use the app store too. I even setup all my developer crap again just for shits.section_014
    • hey section ... can you post your parts list in the Hackintosh thread (do we have one?)monospaced
    • the only downside to the Hackintosh is that once you add a 27" 5K retina display, the build is 2X the cost of an iMacmonospaced
