I always remember the story my first step mum told me about a confusion she had when she was a kid.. She was a very bright academic type, and had clearly always been a reader. When she was very young she use to read [I think] Swallows and Amazons and she'd fall over whenever they mentioned making pack lunches up to take away on their adventures.
She always wondered what the fuck a 'ku-kum-ber' was, being completely unable to parse what a 'cucumber' meant, having never seen it written down prior.
